Residents Give Back to Families in Need

For seven weeks, residents of Traditions of Wayland, ages 76 – 96, measured, pinned, sliced and twisted fabric into 13 “no-sew” blankets. Their aim was to create crib blankets for youngsters served by the Scattered Sites Shelter for Homeless Families, a program of South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) in Framingham.
The project was made possible by Peter Isaacson, proprietor of Fabric Place Basement which opened in Natick last year. “When I approached the store manager about donating the fabric, I was prepared to have to sell them on the project, but they both eagerly embraced the idea and donated more than 25 yards of polar fleece in a variety of colorful prints and solids” said Myra Marshall, Activities Associate at Traditions of Wayland, an independent and assisted living facility.
Scattered Sites Program Supervisor and several Case Managers were on hand to receive the blankets delivered last week and expressed their appreciation of the effort and delight with the end results. “The children who get these blankets are going to be so happy! They’re so cute and so much nicer than the standard blue or white blankets we normally provide” said Matilda, Program Supervisor.
More than 20 residents at Traditions participated in the project, several making it a point to attend every session. “Management and residents at Traditions both loved the idea of doing community service projects, and we are starting to plan our next undertaking”, Myra said.
