AUTHOR WILLIAM MARTIN TO TALK.  Historical suspense writer William Martin (author of Back Bay and many others) will be at the library on Tuesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. to talk about his latest book, The Lincoln Letter.  
 
FRIENDS BOOK AND BAKE SALE.  The Friends’ semi-annual book and bake sale will be on Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 28, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Town Building Large Hearing Room.  Book donations will be accepted during set-up on Wednesday, October 24, and Thursday, October 25, in the Large Hearing Room.  Donations of baked goods will be accepted from Friday until the end of the sale on Sunday.  There is a preview for Friends of the Wayland Library on Friday, October 26, from 6-8:30 p.m.  This fundraiser helps the Friends support the library’s museum pass program as well as many other library programs.
 
BAKERS NEEDED!  The Friends are looking for a few (okay, more than a few) good bakers to contribute confections to the fall and spring book sales.  Baked goods attract people of all ages to the sale and add substantially to the bottom line.  Bakers will receive a reminder call the week before the sale.  This year’s sale will be held on October 26-28.  If you’re interested in being added to our call list, please contact Anne Heller at 508-358-4515.  
 
ESTATE PLANNING FOR SPECIAL NEEDS.  On Monday, October 29, from 7-9 p.m., Ken Shulman, a partner at Day Pitney LLP, and David Harmon, a Financial Advisor at AXA Advisors, will discuss issues that families of special needs individuals and those individuals themselves must address when they plan their estates including guardianship, public benefits programs, special needs trusts and related planning issues.
 
EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS WITH GARY GEKOW.  On four Tuesday evenings this fall we will be holding employment workshops with Senior Employment Specialist Gary Gekow to help people kick-start their job searches.  The first workshop will be on Tuesday, October 16, at 7 p.m. and will be a “Resume Writing Review.”  Gary will discuss resume writing in general, via a round table group format.  Participants are encouraged to bring their existing resume for confidential one-on-one analysis as time permits.  Dates are topics of subsequent workshops are as follows:  October 30 (Cover & Thank You Letters), November 13 (Interviewing), and November 20 (Salary and Benefits Negotiation).   
 
LEGO CLUB!  The next monthly meeting of our LEGO CLUB for children ages 6 and up will be on Wednesday, November 21, 3-4 p.m.  This monthly program is an opportunity for children to use their imaginations to make fabulous creations out of Legos!  We could use more Legos, so please drop off your no-longer-needed SMALL Lego blocks in the Children’s Room.  
 
Parent/Child Book Group.  Our new parent-child library book group will start on Monday, October 22, (7-8 p.m.).  It’s a group for children in 4th and 5th grade, with a parent.  Each month we will discuss a different book.  The first book will be Rebecca Stead's First Light.  The group will decide together what next month's book will be.  Led by Children's Librarian Pam McCuen.  For more information, call Pam at 508-358-2308.
 
GREAT DECISIONS 2012.  The next Great Decisions meeting will be on Friday, October 19, from 9:15-11:30 a.m. and the topic will be “Indonesia.”  
 
WAYLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY POETRY WORKSHOP.  The library sponsors a poetry writing group that meets twice a month on two Wednesdays a month, from 2-4 pm. At each session members listen to each other's poems and offer suggestions for improvement.  Anyone interested in writing poetry is welcome to visit.  Exact dates can be found at the library's online calendar at waylandlibrary.org.  For more information, call Joan Kimball at 978-318-0991.  On Wednesday, October 17, from 2-4 p.m., well-known poet X. J. (Joe) Kennedy will come to the Poetry Workshop to offer suggestions for writing poems, based on samples submitted to him by members of the workshop. The session is open to the public.  Kennedy has published over 30 collections of poetry for both children and adults, including translations from the Greek and French. He has won many awards, including the Robert Frost gold medal for lifetime achievement.  He lives in Lexington with his wife Dorothy. This poetry instructional session is provided every autumn by the Friends of the Library.
 
CHILDREN’S POETRY WORKSHOPS.  Our next monthly poetry workshops for children ages eight and up will be on Wednesday, November 28, from 7-8 p.m.  Children will listen to, read, and write poetry.  Led by Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen.
 
OCTOBER ART EXHIBITS.  The foyer features the work of children’s book artist Nancy Poydar.  Nancy has written and illustrated sixteen children's picture books as well as illustrated many others. She has been a Wayland resident for forty years.  This month the Raytheon Room contains artwork Elizabeth Brennan.  Elizabeth is a member of the Copley Society (Co-So) of Boston and graduated from Regis College as one of the first concentrators in art. 
 
NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP.  Our Needlework/Handwork group meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Raytheon Room.  It’s a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together.  For more information, contact Ann Moses at annmoses@verizon.net or 508-358-7113.  Dates for the rest of this year are:  Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 2, Feb. 6, Mar. 6, Apr. 3, May 1, and June 5.
