So Sexy, So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood & What We Can Do About It, February 6 at Loker

Has your child asked you what “sexy” means? Does he strut around to the song I’m sexy and I know it? Is she drawn to provocative clothing already?

Today’s children are growing up in an environment saturated with images of sexual appearance and behavior that they cannot fully understand. It can influence how they think about being male and female, their bodies, and what they want to be, do, and wear. It can confuse children about the nature of adult relationships and promote precocious sexuality. Based on her book, So Sexy So Soon, Dr. Diane E. Levin will explore the current situation, how it is affecting children, and what we can do to promote healthy development in these times.

This event is free and open to the public. It will be held on Wednesday, February 6 at 7:30pm at the Loker School, 47 Loker Street in Wayland, MA. The discussion is sponsored by Wayland Elementary Schools Parent Teacher Organization.

The speaker, Dr. Diane E. Levin, Ph.D., is Professor of Education at Wheelock College, where she has been training early childhood professionals for over twenty-five years. Early in her career she was a Wayland Public Schools teacher. Since then she has become an internationally recognized expert on the effects of media, violence, and commercial culture on children. She is the author of numerous books including So Sexy So Soon in which she and her co-author provide to parents the information, skills, and confidence they need to discuss sensitive topics openly and effectively so their kids can just be kids.
