375th Events in December

White-Wayland-375-LogoWayland continues to celebrate its 375th anniversary with the release of two publications and four special events that will take place during the month of December.

375 Publications

Just in time for the holiday gift-giving, the Wayland Historical Tours booklet and the 375 Years and Still Cooking cookbook are available at the Depot, Donelan’s, Russell’s, Stop and Shop, and the Wayland Historical Society for $15 each.

The Tours booklet, which was originally written for the town’s celebration of the US Bicentennial, has been updated to reflect the changes that have occurred since 1976. The booklet describes Wayland during three time periods: the Sudbury Village, 1638-1676; East Sudbury, 1776; and Wayland and Cochituate Centers as they developed in the 19th century

Included in the cookbook are old time recipes such as Oswego tea, oxtail soup, and minc’d pies pastry crust made with brandy and ale yeast and recipes from your neighbors, friends, and local restaurants. The book also includes a brief history of Wayland and lots of helpful hints.

Events

If you have never attended the (original) Town Center Open House, this is the year to celebrate the beginning of winter by visiting the Grout-Heard House, library, and the Depot. On December 8th, from 2 to 5, all three locations will serve refreshments including samples from the 375th cookbook. Each room of the Grout-Heard house is beautifully decorated by members of the Wayland Garden Club and in the alcove of the Stone Room stands a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments made by Wayland Girl Scouts. The library will have a special program for children while the Depot will have a wide variety of handmade gifts as well as the 375th publications. The day will end with a community sing on the steps of First Parish Church, about 4:30.

While attending the library open house, check out the Arts Wayland exhibit in the Raytheon Room. Entitled Wayland and Environs – Over the River and Through the Woods, the theme celebrates Arts Wayland members’ experience and appreciation of Wayland and surrounding area as part of the group’s celebration of Wayland’s 375th anniversary. A special reception with the artists is scheduled for Saturday, December 14th from 2:30 to 4.

Handel’s Messiah Community Sing-Along is a special Walden Forum presentation arranged by Tom Liszewski. Performers include the Wayland High School Sinfonia Orchestra, professional soloists, and YOU! Join the audience chorus on Thursday, December 12 at 7:30 at the Wayland High School Auditorium. Singers of all skills are invited to participate. If you have ever wanted to sing Messiah with a full orchestra accompaniment, this is your chance!

The final December 375th event is Santa’s annual ride on December 20, 21, and 22. Begun in 1954, this will be the 50th year the Wayland Firefighter’s Association has been running this wonderful event. Come celebrate this holiday tradition no matter your age. Look for the schedule of stops as we get nearer the end of the year.

Please join in these events and look for the 375th January schedule of events.
