FRANK SMITH RETURNS
Classics scholar Frank Smith will return next month with a program entitled “Dante, Milton, and the Devil.” This course will examine the great adversary of Western literature, the Devil, as he appears in Dante’s “Inferno” and the first four books (chapters) of Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Smith will discuss the characterization of the Devil in each epic as well as the art inspired by them. Participants are encouraged to read Dante’s “Inferno,” translated by John Ciardi. Any edition of “Paradise Lost” would be fine, but Mr. Smith particularly recommends the Barnes and Noble Classics edition with introduction and notes by David Hawkes. Smith was a Fulbright scholar and is the former head of the Language Department at Wayland High School. The series will start on Tuesday, March 25, not on March 18 as previously announced.
