Wayland Summer Strings to be offered in August

For the first time ever, a Wayland Summer Strings program is being offered to children who will be entering Grades 6 – 9. Led by Whitney Tandon, Wayland Public Schools Strings Director for Grades 3 – 8, the one week program will culminate in a concert for family and friends. Dates are August 4 – August 8, 2014, and two sessions will be offered: 9 am – 12 noon and 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm.Children enrolling should have at least three years of experience with their chosen instrument. According to Ms. Tandon, “Summer Strings will be a week of chamber music and fun. Daily activities will include guided chamber ensemble rehearsals, musical games and activities, and preparation of a large ensemble piece.”

The goal of the week is to have “a great time making music together,” Ms. Tandon says. The daily schedule will include small group activity as well as large ensembles in preparation for the Friday concerts. Cost for the 15 hours is $150 per student. Enrollment will be limited to 16. Students should be entering Grades 6, 7, 8, or 9 in the summer of 2014. Program location will be announced at a later date.
