Wayland LibraryLIBRARY CLOSED. The library will be closed from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, for staff development. We will be open that afternoon. Also, the library will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 20, and all day Monday, April 21, for Patriots Day.

SPARKY’S PUPPETS. Sparky’s Puppets will perform “Aesop’s Fables” on Saturday, March 29, from 2:30-3:15 p.m. in the afternoon. Watch a timid mouse rescue a huge lion. Sing along with the grasshopper and the ant. See what happens when a naughty boy cries “Wolf!” too many times. For ages 3 and up.

TRAVEL LECTURE: LAOS AND CAMBODIA. On Tuesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m., Wayland resident John Leupold will take us on an armchair visit to Laos and Cambodia, two of Southeast Asia’s little known treasures. The program will show images and highlight history, culture, conservation, and social issues that face both countries as they grapple with how to preserve their biological and cultural heritage in the 21st century. Mr. Leupold has frequently visited these two countries during the past five years and has escorted ten groups to Laos and Cambodia with his company, Champaca Journeys, which specializes in small group cultural tours. He loves introducing new visitors to these remarkable countries.

FRIENDS SPRING BOOK & BAKE SALE. The Friends’ Book and Bake Sale is a great semi-annual community event. This spring it will take place on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 4, from 12-4 p.m. There will also be a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, May 2, from 6-8:30 p.m. Memberships will be available at the sale starting at 5:30 p.m. Sale items include delicious baked goods and thousands of quality books in good condition for children and adults. All proceeds go to support Library programs and services. The sale will be held in the Large Hearing Room in the Wayland Town Building. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, April 30, and Thursday, May 1. Want to help the Library AND perform community service? The Friends of the Wayland Library are looking for high schools students who are willing to move donated books in preparation of the book sale. We’re looking for volunteers to move books from the freight shed in the Library parking lot to the Large Hearing Room in the Town Building on Sunday, April 27, at noon, and to rearrange boxes in the Large Hearing Room on Tuesday, April 29, at 7 p.m. Volunteers will earn two hours of community service. FRANK SMITH IS BACK Classics scholar Frank Smith has started his series on “Dante, Milton, and the Devil,” which examines the great adversary of Western literature, the Devil, as he appears in Dante’s “Inferno” and the first four books (chapters) of Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Remaining program dates are April 1, 8, 15, and 22.

BABY SIGNING. A Baby Signing workshop, led by Sheryl White, will be held in the Raytheon Room on Thursday, April 3, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Baby signing deepens bonding, gives babies the ability to express themselves, enhances early literacy skills, and reduces frustration for everyone. For babies 2 months to preverbal.

ORIGAMI WORKSHOP. Origami artist and teacher Andrew Anselmo will teach an origami workshop for children ages 7 and up in the Raytheon Room on Wednesday, April 23, from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Space is limited, so please call the Youth Services Department at 508-358-2308 to register.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, generally meets on the first Wednesday morning of each month from 10–noon. in the Raytheon Room. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, April 2. This is a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together. Wayland at the Dawn of the American Revolution. On April 19, 1775, over 300 men from Sudbury (modern Wayland and Sudbury) marched off toward Concord to participate in the opening battles of the American Revolution. Those 300 represented the largest contingent of men from any town to take part in the first day of the eight-year struggle for independence. Join National Park Ranger and Wayland Historical Society board member Jane Sciacca on Sunday, April 13, at 2:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room for a Wayland perspective on this momentous event in our history. This program is sponsored by the 375th Committee.

“MOZART’S “COSI FAN TUTTE”: A GUIDED TOUR. “Così Fan Tutte” is the third and last of Mozart’s operatic collaborations with librettist Lorenzo DaPonte. The opera has moments of laugh-out-loud comedy as well as great tenderness as it explores the myths and realities of fidelity between lovers. On Wednesday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. opera enthusiast Phil Radoff will walk us through this Mozart masterpiece in advance of the Metropolitan Opera’s production in high definition at many theaters in Metrowest.

ARTISTS OF PLACE WITH JUDY SCHURGIN. Mark your calendars—Judy Schurgin will return for three Tuesday afternoons in May to talk about three important artists, Claude Monet, Winslow Homer, and Georgia O’Keeffe, who were very inspired by particular landscapes near their homes, notably Giverney, Prout’s Neck, and Abiquiu. This series will focus on the life and works of these innovative and influential artists. The first program will be Tuesday, May 6, at 1 p.m
