The following press release was submitted by Police Chief Irving:

The Wayland Police Department is investigating the theft of six street signs stolen from Thompson Street.  The signs were installed on August 25th, after the Board of Selectmen voted to make Thompson Street a one way street heading in an easterly direction.

The signs stolen were four “One Way” signs, one “No Right Turn” sign and one “Do Not Enter” sign.  The total value of the signs was approximately $300.  It is believed that the signs were stolen during the overnight hours of September 8/9.

According to Chief Robert Irving, “The theft of these signs is not only a criminal act, but it opens the person responsible to civil liability if an accident occurs because the signs are missing.  In most cases, the theft or vandalism of street signs is a random act; however, this seems to be in direct response to the decision to make Thompson Street a one way road.  If caught, those responsible will be charged with Larceny Over $250, which is a felony.”

The Department of Public Works is making arrangements to replace the signs as soon as possible.
