Wayland Concert Series presents Mundial, Sunday, November 2

The next event in the Wayland Concert Series is Sunday November 2 at 7:00 pm on the Main Stage at Wayland High School.

Mundial
Darryl Hollister, piano
Emmanuel Feldman, cello
Phillip Lima, baritone
Melissa Mielens, flute

In a concert celebrating African-American and African composers.

JB Kwabena Nketia: Republic Suite for flute and piano
George Walker: Cello Sonata
Maurice Ravel: Chansons Madecasse
Maurice Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin
In this concert, Maurice Ravel’s Chanson Madéccases (Songs of Madagascar) introduce an African focus. Says Hollister, “in the remainder of the concert, we want introduce works of African and African-American composers perhaps to a new audience. African classical music draws it roots of harmony and rhythm from African folk music, weaving these elements into a completely new art form. Repeating drum patterns are a major source of inspiration, giving the music a vibrancy not found in other classical music.”

H. Kwabena Nketia’s Republic Suite for flute and piano was written to commemorate the independence of Ghana in 1957. Nketia is considered the dean of African composers, as Pulitzer-prize winner George Walker is the dean of African-American composers. Walker’s Sonata for Cello and Piano is awash in neo-romantic emotions, using spiky rhythms that hearken towards African music.

The concert is free and open to all. No tickets are required. For more information, visit waylandconcerts.org or call 508-358-2667.
