HOLIDAY HOURS
On Monday, October 12, the library will be closed for Columbus Day.

POETRY READING BY MOIRA LINEHAN & MARY PINARD
On Tuesday, September 29, from 7:30-9 p.m., award-winning poets Moira Linehan and Mary Pinard will each present a reading of her poetry in the library’s Raytheon Room. The poets will also talk about techniques and strategies they use to generate new poems and creative ideas. Last year Salmon Press published Mary’s collection, “Portal.” In April of this year Southern Illinois University Press will bring out Moira’s second collection, “Incarnate Grace.”

BECOMING A VOLUNTEER ENGLISH TUTOR
Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? We always have a waiting list of learners who need help. Program Director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for a course that starts on October 7. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20. Volunteers work one-on-one with adults who want to improve their abilities to speak and write English. Learn About 2015 Wayland TEDx!
Ever wanted to participate in a TEDx event or been curious about what is involved to create one? On Thursday, October 1, from 7-9 p.m., come to the library to learn about the last spring’s Wayland TEDx event from some of the participanting Wayland Middle and High School students. BOOK AND BAKE SALE – GREAT COMMUNITY EVENT!
The Friends of the Library will sponsor their Fall Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, November 8, from noon-4 p.m. There will also be a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, November 6, from 5-8 p.m. (new hours). Memberships will be available at the sale starting at 4:30 p.m. Sale items include delicious baked goods and thousands of quality books in good condition for children and adults. All proceeds go to support Library programs and services. The sale will be held in the Large Hearing Room in the Wayland Town Building, 41 Cochituate Road. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, November 4, and Thursday, November 5. Donations of baked goods will be accepted from Friday until the end of the sale on Sunday. Internet book scanning devices are not permitted in the sale area. BAKERS NEEDED!
The Friends are looking for bakers to contribute confections to the fall book sale. Baked goods attract sweet lovers of all ages to the sale and add substantially to the bottom line. The sale will be held on November 6-8. If you’re interested, please contact Anne Heller at 508-358-4515.

Launch Party For “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard”
The next Teen Advisory Board (TAB) Meeting will be a launch party for “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.” We’ll have Nordic crafts, games, Rick Riordan trivia, treats and more!  Thursday, October 8, 2:45-4 p.m. for teens in grades 6-12 in the library’s Raytheon Room.

BEAT THE BUGS!–WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BEAT LYME
Dan Wolff, president and founder of TickEase, Inc., will be our first Great Presenter this season on Tuesday, October 6, at 7:30 p.m. He will talk about ticks, their behavior and life cycles, and how they relate to the environment and how to best defend yourself, your family, and your pets against the threat of Lyme Disease.

GREAT DECISIONS: BRAZIL’S METAMORPHOSIS
The library sponsors a Great Decisions group meets monthly on a Friday morning. The next meeting is Friday, October 16, 9:15-11:30 a.m. and the topic is Brazil. Some of Brazil’s trickiest problems—deep divisions over how to tackle serious income inequality, weak civic institutions and poor regional leadership—have held it back.

APPS FOR ORGANIZATION
If you have an iPhone or iPad, there are some great apps to help you keep organized. Come to a class at the library on Monday, October 19, 2-3 p.m. to learn about Wunderlist, Grocery IQ, and GoodReads. You will become better at keeping track of whatever is important to you, whether it’s good restaurants, people you’ve met, or thank you notes to be written. You’ll have shopping carts organized by aisle for as many stores as you want. And you can keep track of books you’ve read and want to read. Please come to class with your Apple ID and password. HANDWORK GROUP
This group welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-12 a.m. to share ideas and resources in the Raytheon Room. We also chat and socialize as we work on new or UFO’s (unfinished projects).
