MEET THE LIBRARY ARCHITECT!  The Board of Library Trustees and the Library Planning Committee invite you to help design the next Wayland Free Public Library. This is your chance to tell our architect what you want to see in a new or expanded library building. Come meet our design team from Tappé Architects on either Tuesday, May 17, or Wednesday, June 8, at 7 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room.

wicked pissed “WICKED PISSED” WITH TED REINSTEIN. New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far! For instance, did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill? Or that the revolution is still being fought—by Lexington and Concord?! From the colonial era through early aviation to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, on Monday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. WCVB’s Chronicle Journalist Ted Reinstein will tell us who’s really “Wicked Pissed” in New England, and why. (Followed by Q&A, and book-selling/signing.)

INTERNET PRIVACY FOR LIBRARY PATRONS.  On Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. join Library Freedom Project founder Alison Macrina for a discussion of how you can better maintain your privacy from government snoops, corporate trackers, and the hacking industry.

CLOSED MEMORIAL DAY.  We will be closed on Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day.

3D DESIGN WORKSHOPS.   On Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m., 3D artist Eric Carlsen and assistants will return to the library to introduce teens and adults to the process of creating 3D models using Blender, a powerful and sophisticated 3D design tool. Eric will also give an “Advanced Blender” workshop for people who are already familiar with Blender on Thursday evening, May 26, at 7 p.m. Attendance at these workshops needs to be limited, so please register through our website calendar.

mangaManga workshop for teens.  Manga Artist Kat Klockow will talk about all the steps that go into drawing comics and the cultural differences and similarities between Japanese manga and American comics. For teens in grades 6 through 12. Tuesday, May 31, from 2:45-4:15 p.m.

    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Parent/Child Book Group.  Wednesday May 18, 7-8 p.m. for fourth and fifth graders with a parent.  May’s book is My Name is Not Friday by Jon Walter.
  • Spanish Storytime.  Wednesday, May 25, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old.
  • STEAM Team—Paper Planes and Parachutes!  What makes an airplane fly and a parachute float?  Let’s discover aerodynamics together and test out our theories! Wednesday, May 25, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 5 and up
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesday, May 31, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • Read to Corbyn the Samoyed.  Tuesday, June 7, 3:30 p.m. for kids of all ages

Listening to the Rolling Rivers: Three Rivers, One Story.  The SuAsCo Wild and Scenic River Stewardship Council is sponsoring award-winning storyteller Tony Toledo in the library’s Raytheon Room on Saturday, May 21, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Come hear the fascinating story of our rivers, their colorful history, and some very special places. This free program is made possible through the generous support of the National Park Service and in part by a grant from the Wayland Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Suitable for ages 6 and up.

  • Think Like a Librarian–Get better at finding books at the library.  Monday May 23, 2-3 p.m.
  •  “Google It” Class Learn what Google has to offer besides the basic search.  Monday, May 16, 2-3 p.m.

wayland town-wide readWayland Summer Read – Join us for our first community-wide summer common read!   We’ve selected Juliette Fay’s new book, The Tumbling Turner Sisters, historical fiction about a family performing vaudeville. The book is so new that we kick off our program Thursday, June 9, 7pm at the author’s book launch at Sandy Burr Country Club where the author will formally present the book and get us excited to read it.  On Sunday, September 18 at 3pm the author will join us in the library for a casual book discussion in the Library.  Come with your thoughts and questions!  Extra copies will be available in the library so you may take the book with you on your summer adventures.

COMMUNICATE BETTER!  Come learn some energy self-management techniques and how they can help you communicate and lead from a place of personal power. Presenter Rachel Rice is the founder and CEO of Five Rhythms Consulting and has spent the majority of her career in corporate leadership roles, most recently as CMO for New York Life Retirement Plan Services, overseeing marketing, product development, web strategy, and creative execution. She is also a Certified Eden Energy Medicine Practitioner, Reiki Master, and meditation practitioner of many years. Rachel helps clients integrate mind/body practices into their business routine and leadership style to drive the best possible outcomes for themselves and their organizations. Monday, June 13, 7-8 p.m.

Richard Gid PowersRICHARD POWERS–THE SURREAL LIFE OF A SCIENCE FICTION ARTIST.  At our next Great Presenters program on Tuesday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m., Wayland resident Kathy Powers Sherry and her brother Richard will talk about the life and prolific career of their father, Richard “Gorman” Powers. He is widely regarded as the single most influential artist in the history of paperback illustrative art and was recently inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame. His influential career spanned over four decades during which he produced jacket illustrations for some 1,200 science fiction novels. During June, Powers’ art will be on display in the library.

PIZZA/STUDY NIGHTS FOR WHS STUDENTS.  During Wayland High School finals week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. on the evenings of June 14-16 (Tuesday-Thursday) for high school students who want to study for exams. We will serve pizza a little after 5 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.
