COMMUNITY MEETING ON LIBRARY BUILDING STUDY. Come hear Tappé Architects talk about what a new library down near the Middle School might be like and see some initial plan drawings for such a facility. Wednesday, September 21, 7 p.m. in the Large Hearing Room of the Wayland Town Building.

TEENAGE PAGE NEEDED.  The library is accepting applications for one remaining position as a high school page starting this fall. Responsibilities include shelving materials, emptying the book drop, and other related tasks. Starting in September, pages work one Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and one Sunday 2-5 p.m. every 4 weeks.

Minuteman Library AppNEW MINUTEMAN LIBRARY MOBILE APP! Minuteman Libraries are proud to announce our new Mobile App for iOS and Android devices. You may already use OverDrive and hoopla to get electronic content on your phone or tablet. You may already have your library barcode stored in an app on your phone to scan at checkout. You may even be using Air PAC to get mobile access to the catalog or the Wayland Free Public Library’s great website on your phone, but this new app pulls the mobile library experience together in one great package. On Thursday, September 8, from 4-5 p.m., bring your phone or tablet and your Apple ID / Google Login and Password to the library. We’ll download, install, and personalize your app. Once the app is loaded on our devices we’ll learn how to use the app to: scan books you want to read with the camera to see if the library has a copy, search the digital and physical library catalog, reserve available materials. place holds, and learn about upcoming events at the library.

VOLUNTEER COMPUTER PROGRAMMERS NEEDED. Are you passionate about getting teen girls coding? We are launching a Wayland branch of the national “Girls Who Code” club and are seeking volunteer instructors. If you are interested and have basic computer programming skills, apply online at girlswhocode.com/volunteer and choose Wayland Public Library as your site. Questions? picasso self portraitPAINT LAB: PABLO PICASSO. Kids ages 5 and up, come put on a lab coat and enter the Maker Lab! Join Giselle from The Learning Hub for the first session of a series of STEAM Maker classes. These classes will inspire kids to make new things and discover the world around them. In this session children will learn about Pablo Picasso and make a self-portrait. Wednesday, September 21, 3-4 p.m.

  • The One and Only IvanParent-Child Book Group. Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m. for third and fourth graders with a parent. September’s book for discussion is “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate.
  • Read to Corbyn the Samoyed. Thursday September 22, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages 3 and up. Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor!
  • Book Buddies. Monday, September 26, 4-5 p.m. for children in grades K to 2 with an adult. This month’s we will read and talk about “The Red Hat” by David Teague and then make a craft.
  • Zumba Kids Jr. Tuesday, September 27, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • STEAM Team: Cool Chemistry. Wednesday, September 28, 3-4 p.m. for ages 5 and up. Kids will explore the amazing properties of water, baking soda, vinegar, soap, and milk in several hands-on experiments.
  • Spanish Storytime. Wednesday, September 28, 10:30-11 for babies to 5 years. Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.

Grow Your Organization Without Destroying Greatness. In an entertaining mixture of lecture, exercise, and great television commercial, Dr. Laurence J. Stybel’s presentation will argue that scaling an organization is about keeping the values that made it great, while adding business discipline. This program will interest profit and nonprofit leaders who want to expand their organizations, and private equity partners looking at investments. Tuesday, September 27, at 7 p.m.

brilliant beaconsBRILLIANT BEACONS: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN LIGHTHOUSE. Eric Jay Dolin, the best-selling author of “Leviathan” will talk about his most recent book, “Brilliant Beacons,” the story of America through the prism of its beloved coastal sentinels. Against the backdrop of an expanding nation and rich in maritime lore, the book traces the evolution of America’s lighthouse system, highlighting the various struggles to illuminate the nation’s coastlines. Thursday, September 29, 7-8:30 p.m.

LIBRARY WORKSHOPS

  • Social Media Morning. Monday, September 12, 10 a.m. Learn about social media services like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that are transforming communication for people and the organizations and businesses they work with.
  • Intro to the iPhone and iPad, Thursdays, September 8 and October 13, 2 p.m. Come if you have some experience with your iPhone/iPad, but feel like you might be missing out on some of the basics. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.

SEPTEMBER BOOK DISCUSSIONS FOR ADULTS. The library runs several adult book groups, and new members are always welcome. For more information about any of the groups, call the library at 508-358-2311.

HIGH SCHOOL ROBOTICS TEAM DEMONSTRATION. On Saturday, September 24, 10:30 a.m-12:30 p,m. come to the library’s upper parking lot and check out the Wayland High School First Robotics Challenge Team (“the Control Freaks”) and their 2016 competition robot.

shen yun symphony orchestraShen Yun Symphony Orchestra history. Volunteers of Shen Yun, a non-profit organization that works to keep Chinese cultural history alive, will present the history of Shen Yun, its significance in today’s world, and even share snippets of the Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra’s performance. Tuesday, September 20, 7 p.m.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP. Do you know someone who is learning basic English? The library is starting an English conversation group for beginning and advanced beginning English speakers. This group is ideal for people who want to practice their English and learn about American culture. We will meet two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The first two sessions will be on September 9 and 30. Also, English-language learners at any level can apply for a free, one-on-one, English-language tutor. Applications are available at the adult circulation desk.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our needlework group, which is open to all, will start up again in September. This group, facilitated by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. This year’s dates are the following: September 7, October 5, November 2, December 7, January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3.

SEPTEMBER ART EXHIBITS. This month the library’s foyer contains paintings by artist Leah Litin and the Raytheon Room features the photograph of David Nelson. A public reception for Mr. Nelson’s work is planned for Saturday, September 17, from 1-4 p.m.

ORLOVMELISSA ORLOV: “ADULT ADHD, RELATIONSHIPS AND YOUR FAMILY”. If you have a child with ADHD, chances are good you also have an adult with ADHD in the family. Our monthly Great Presenters series will start up on Tuesday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m. when Wayland resident Melissa Orlov will discuss the effect of ADHD across generations and provide strategies to tame the chaos. Ms. Orlov is one of the country’s top experts in this area and has written two award-winning books on this topic. She trains therapists, speaks around the world, and provides seminars and counseling for ADHD-impacted couples in need. You can find more about her at www.ADHDmarriage.com.
