The Wayland School Committee is pleased to announce that it has agreed to enter into contract negotiations with Dr. Arthur Unobskey to be Wayland’s next superintendent.

Dr. Unobskey is currently serving as Assistant Superintendent of Gloucester Schools.  Previously, he was Principal of Washington Irving Middle School in Boston, Principal of Concord Middle School, and, before that, Director of Instruction at Dearborn Middle School in Roxbury.  Earlier experience was at Boston English High School where he was first school-wide writing coordinator and then Program Director for Humanities.  Before that he had experience as a High School teacher in history and in English, first at a high school in Baltimore, then at an elementary school in Cambridge, and finally at Lincoln-Sudbury High School.  He is the founder of Summer Ink, a summer writing program for students, targeting under-served areas.  He holds his Bachelor’s Degree from Yale University, his Master’s Degree in the Art of Teaching from Brown University, and a Doctorate in Education from Boston College.

The School Committee was particularly impressed with Dr. Unobskey’s child-centered approach, and his emphasis on ensuring that students see a connection between what they are learning and how they can have an impact on their community.  When he defines success, he thinks about the whole child, their academic success, their resilience, their social-emotional competency, and the development of their unique voice.  He brings a commitment to excellence, compassion, intelligence, and child-focus that makes him well-suited to the needs and values of our school system.

The School Committee would like to thank the many people who participated in the process that led to this selection, including the teachers, administrators and students who met with the candidates, the community members who participated in the forums that led to the development of a desired profile or watched the interviews and provided their feedback, our search consultants, NESDEC, and especially the members of the Superintendent Screening Committee.
