Computer Programming Summer Class for Wayland High School Students

For the second year in a row, Wayland High School graduate Eli Bucher is leading a computer programming class for Wayland High School students entering Grades 9 through 12.  Class dates are:  Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from June 27 – through August 4, 2017. The time is 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm and the location is Wayland High School. This summer, Bucher is being assisted by Jack Bachman, whom Bucher describes as “a talented programmer and recent WHS graduate.”

Along with teaching students how to program, the class’s goals include inspiring a deep interest in computer science and building complex problem-solving skills. Participation in last year’s program proved to be great preparation for the Advanced Placement Computer Science class at the high school.

This year’s class will include an additional focus on graphics and game development. Students will be challenged both creatively and intellectually by the project-based curriculum, while learning how to think like a computer scientist will enable students to break big problems down into simpler and more approachable ones.

Bucher studied Computer Science and Business at UMass Amherst, and has experience teaching computer programming as a teaching assistant at UMass, one-on-one over Skype, andas  the leader of last year’s pilot program in Wayland.  He has worked as a developer for companies such as MITRE (Defense), OmNomApps (App Development), and Boston Children’s Hospital (Social Robotics and 3 D Printing).

The program fee is $85 for 17 classes. To register, email buchereli@gmail.com and send a check payable to WSCP with “Computer Programming” in the memo section to: WSCP, 47 Loker Street, Wayland, MA 01778.

The class is offered as part of Wayland School Community Programs, Community Education, and is being hosted by Wayland High School.
