New Wayland Library proposal turned down

Wayland Town Crier 4/4/18: New Wayland Library proposal turned down. Voters at Town Meeting on Tuesday night failed to deliver the required two-thirds majority to authorize $29 million in spending for a new 33,000-square-foot library to be built on the site of the old Department of Public Works at 195 Main St. near Wayland Middle School. The article went down 760-479 on a second ballot after reported malfunctions of handsets used for electronic voting forced moderator Dennis Berry to call for a recount.

  1. A casual reader might mistakenly think the NO Library vote garnered the higher number of 760 votes. Important to distinguish that the YES Library vote took that much higher number, walloping the NO voters. 61.3% of the vote to 38.7%. Nearly, 2/3s of the Wayland voters who could make it to the polls on a challenging weeknight wanted a new library next to the Middle School. Alas, they were but 67 votes shy of the 2/3s hurdle, required for debt financing.

Two weeks in a row, residents of Wayland did their best, with a majority opting for a new library twice. Clearly, the favored choice. Popular vote was with our Library Trustees.
