Weston Drama Workshop announces 56th summer season

Weston Drama Workshop, a nonprofit youth summer theater organization based in Weston, recently announced this summer’s exciting lineup of productions. WDW, which stages performances each July at Regis College’s Fine Arts Center, has been producing professional-quality shows starring local youth artists for over half a century, Summer 2018 being their 56th season. Auditions are open to participants entering 5th grade through age 23.

Children of Eden, with music by Stephen Schwartz and book by John Caird, will be this summer’s Morning Program musical, open to students entering 5th grade through entering 9th. The production will be directed by Aidan O’Hara. Students in this age range can also participate in the Afternoon Theatre Intensive, which will produce two one-act Theatre for Young Audiences productions: The Musical  Adventures of Flat Stanley, a musical directed by Katie Brobst, and The Stinky  Cheeseman and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, a play directed by Tristan Burke and Callie Llewellyn. These productions will each have two public performances in addition to touring local summer camps and elder care facilities. A limited number of spots are still available for the Morning and Afternoon productions, and once they are filled, these programs will return to waiting list only. Auditions for Children of Eden will take place Saturday, May 19 at 1 PM and 4 PM. Afternoon Theatre Intensive productions will assign roles once the rehearsal process starts.

WDW will also stage three productions as a part of the Evening Program, which serves participants entering 9th grade through age 23. Participants will be cast in one production. This year’s shows include Cabaret, the iconic musical by John Kander and Fred Ebb and directed by Skylar Grossman; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, a play by Simon Stephens based on the novel of the same name by Mark Haddon, directed by Stephanie Manning Recine; and Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 motion picture, featuring a score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and directed by Chris Brindley. Auditions for these three shows will take place Monday, May 14 at 6:30 PM, Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 PM, and Saturday, May 19 at 10 AM. This program is currently full, but space is still available on the Audition Registration List with payment of an audition fee. Casting from this list is not guaranteed.

All auditions will take place at the Weston Recreation Center. Auditioners may be asked to come back for a callback audition, which will be held on Sunday, May 20. All shows will be performed July 19-28 at Regis College, and tickets will go on sale later this spring.
