ADULT PROGRAMS

  • Alternative Endings: Home Funerals & Green Burials. Just a few generations ago, all funerals occurred in the home parlor and burials were “green,” part of the natural cycle of death feeding new life.  Home funerals and green burial are both legal in Massachusetts, but few cemeteries in the state allow the latter.  Does Wayland?  Kaat Vander Straeten is a certified permaculture designer in MetroWest Boston, where she founded several organizations for local resilience.  Candace Currie is the former director of planning and cemetery development at Mount Auburn Cemetery.  Join them in a conversation about these new old practices on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Author Talk. Faced with feeding her busy family every night, local chef and food writer Leigh Belanger turned to her kitchen chalkboard.  She quickly discovered that modern menu planning saves time and money, produces better dishes, cuts down on waste, and returns creativity to the kitchen.  She’ll discuss her new cookbook and menu planning guide, My Kitchen Chalkboard, on Thursday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Craft a Book Turkey. Make a fun, decorative paper turkey out of an old book (which we’ll provide).  We’ll be using Exacto knives and hot glue, so this activity on Friday, November 2 at 1:30 p.m. is recommended for ages 12 and up.
  • The Great Presenters: On Gossamer Wings. Model airplanes can range from packaged toys to giant, radio-controlled scale models that a child could sit in.  And then there are the ones that weigh less than one of the bills in your wallet. Enthusiast Ray Harlan explains the attractions and challenges of these delicate, rubber-powered wonders on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Evening Book Group. Lincoln in the Bardo. As Abraham Lincoln mourns in the cemetery where his son, Willie, was recently buried, the resident ghosts tell their own stories in the struggle for Willie’s soul. Join the discussion of this bestselling novel, “a boldly imagined, exquisitely sensitive, sharply funny, and utterly unnerving historical and metaphysical drama” (Booklist), on Monday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m.  Copies available at the library.
  • Explore the New Library of Things. Hitting the road?  Take along a Hotspot, one of our portable wi-fi devices.  Got some slides, videotapes, or LPs you’d like in digital form?  We have devices to convert them.  Not to mention Chromebooks, digital drawing tablet, external DVD drive, wireless phone charger, color-blindness glasses—even a couple of ukuleles.  We’re way beyond books now!
