Wayland Reads: Live From Cairo. Every other year, Wayland Reads offers one book for the whole town to read to foster community through literature.  This time, we’re exploring immigration and the plight of refugees through Live from Cairo by Ian Bassingthwaighte.  A Pen/Hemingway Award finalist and a Kirkus Book of the Year, this brilliant, fast-paced novel follows a group of Western relief workers and an Iranian woman desperate to be reunited with her husband in Massachusetts during the tumult of the Arab Spring.  Exciting, incisive, clear-eyed but compassionate, it’s a compelling tale for our times. Here are just some of the events we’ve planned as part of the program: Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m.  Screening: Frontline: Egypt in Crisis—a DVD viewing and Q & A with journalist Charles M. Sennott. Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m.   Wayland residents tell their personal stories of immigration. For kids: What’s Your Story?: Stories of Home. Wednesday, March 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Join us for a reading of two picture books about child refugees: The Treasure Box (by Margaret Wild) and The Map of Good Memories (by Fran Nuno).  Children will then make their own illustrated books about what home means to them. For children in grades 1 to 3, with caregiver. Led by librarian Elise Katz. Monday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. Immigrants, Asylum Seekers, and Refugees: The Legal Challenges Attorneys Susan Cohen and Irene Freidel speak on the challenges and realities facing immigrants in Massachusetts, including how the ICE detention system and the pathways into and out of immigration custody affect our immigrant friends and neighbors. Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m.   Look for the Helpers: Services for Refugees in the Boston Area Have you ever wondered what it’s like to flee your home and start life over in a new country? Panelists Robbie Adams of the Boston Center for Refugee Health & Human Rights and Cheryl Hamilton of the International Institute of New England will discuss the diverse needs of immigrants, refugees and torture survivors living in Greater Boston. Sunday, April 7 at 3 p.m.   Author Ian Bassingthwaighte reads from Live from Cairo.  We’ll also have kids’ programs and book discussion groups—check our website for details.  Stop by the library for a copy of this terrific book!

• The Great Presenters: Forbidden Love–Chinese and White Mixed Families in the 19th Century. When the first Chinese immigrants came to this country, some married American women and settled here.  Others returned to China.  What kind of obstacles and reception did they face in a time when interracial marriage was largely taboo, on both sides of the Pacific?  Presenter Emma J. Teng is the T.T. and Wei Fong Chao Professor of Asian Civilizations at MIT.  Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.
• The Softer Side of Celtic. Celtic culture is woven deeply throughout the fabric of America and especially so in the Northeast. Musician Jeff Snow combines the music, stories and a wee bit of history from Scotland, Ireland and England into a concert that will inspire singing, laughing, clapping and perhaps a bit of foot stomping.  Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in the Library rotunda.
• New!  Stream Movies for Free with Kanopy.  Just click on the Kanopy logo at our website, or go to waylandlibrary.kanopy.com to set up an account.  Kanopy showcases more than 30,000 films, including documentaries, rare titles, film fest favorites, indie and classic films, and world cinema with collections from Kino Lorber, Music Box Films, Samuel Goldwyn, The Orchard, The Great Courses, PBS and thousands of independent filmmakers.  Films can be streamed on any computer, television, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, AppleTV, Chromecast or Roku.

• Weekly Storytimes
  • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) Tuesdays, March 5, 12, and 19 at 10:30 a.m.
  • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Thursdays, March 14, 21, and 28 at 10:30 a.m.
• Inclusive Playgroup: Stories, Songs, and Sign. This interactive, inclusive music and literacy group is for young children at all levels of communication and ability. Facilitated by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages newborn to 3 years. Wednesdays, February 27, March 13 and 27 at 11:15-12:00p.m.
• Storytime at the Farmer’s Market. Join librarians from Wayland and Sudbury for storytime at the Wayland Winter Farmer’s  Market. Storytimes will be held on the second floor of Russell’s Garden Center, 397 Boston Post Road. For ages babies to age 5, with caregiver. Saturdays, March 2 and 16 at 11:00-11:30 a.m.
• Brain Building Storytime. Storytime, parachute play, and brain building activity. Program led by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages 2 to 5, with parent/caregiver. Wednesday, March 20 at 11:15a.m.-12:00 p.m.
• Zumba. Rhythm and dance program led by Hayley Chizinksy of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio. For ages 2.5 to 4 years. Tuesday, February 26 at 10:30 a.m.
• Storytime with Corbyn the Dog. Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed. Corbyn (with her owner Helen) has been certified as a therapy dog by Pets and People Foundation.  For ages 3 and up. Thursday, February 28 at 10:30 a.m.
• Sing-along with Jeannie Mack. Thursday, March 7, at 10:30 a.m. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs for young children. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation! For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with caregiver.

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS

• Let’s Build: Fastest Marble Run.  Let’s Build is a hands-on building workshop for kids in grades 3-5. Each month will feature a different building challenge. This month’s challenge is to build the fastest marble run. For kids in grades 3-5. Let’s Build workshops are run by Wayland High School Seniors Eileen Chau and Julia Treese. Wednesday, February 27, 3:00-4:30 p.m.
• Parent/Child Book Group. This book discussion group is for 4th and 5th graders with a parent. February’s book is Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke. We will also choose the book for next month. For 4th and 5th graders with a parent. Wednesday, February 27, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
• Lego Club. Wednesday, March 6, 3:00-4:00 p.m. Children will make fabulous creations out of legos. This month’s theme: Ocean Adventure. For ages 5 and up.
