Wayland Citizens Academy Schedule

Residents are invited to attend the first Wayland Citizens Academy beginning Thursday, March 21 at 7pm in the Wayland Town Building.  The purpose of the Academy is to give residents an opportunity to learn how town government operates and the services and functions of various town departments.  The Academy will be held in two segments, four two-hour sessions this spring and four more in the fall.  Each class will be facilitated by town staff and will consist of presentations, interactive discussions, and visits to different town buildings.

Kicking off the Academy will be an overview of the town’s administrative departments, including Selectmen and Town Administrator, human resources, Town Clerk, and related functions, held on March 21 in the Town Building.  This will be shortly before town elections and Town Meeting so you can see what is involved in managing these important functions.

This will be followed on March 28th by the Public Safety departments:  Fire, Police, Joint Communication, and Local Emergency Planning.  Meeting in the Public Safety Building, residents will have an opportunity to learn how the departments operate, what happens when a 911 call comes in, and how personnel plan and train for emergencies.  Participants will also have an opportunity to tour the building and see the various pieces of equipment.

The April 4th session will take place in the Department of Public Works Building on River Road.  The largest town department includes highway maintenance and snow removal, transfer station, water department, parks and trees, and cemeteries.  Stormwater management and wastewater will also be on the agenda.  And there are lots of pieces of equipment to see!

The final spring session will focus on human services and take place at the library on April 11th.  Departments include the library, Recreation, Council on Aging, Youth and Family Services, and the Board of Health.  These are smaller departments but provide vital and often unrecognized services large numbers of residents.

In the fall, the Citizens Academy will highlight the Finance Department, Land Use Departments (Planning, Conservation, Building, and Health), Facilities, and Housing.  These sessions are expected to take place in late September and October.
