Drawn to Trees an Exhibition of work by Handy & Janzen Opens March 19th at Concord Art

Local artists inspired by nature join forces at Concord Center for the Visual Arts

A new exhibition, Drawn to Trees, will be on display at Concord Center for the Visual Arts in Concord, MA from March 19 to April 14, 2019. The exhibit features abstract paintings by Bredt Handy and digitally processed photographs by Thomas E. Janzen. The community is invited to a reception on Thursday March 28 from 6-8pm.

“Both artists draw their imagery from local New England landscape; pairing Bredt’s abstract paintings with Thomas’s uniquely enhanced photographs engages the viewer in a dynamic interplay of natural forms. “ says Kate James, the Executive Director at Concord Art.

Drawn to Trees serves up an exciting natural dialogue between the two artists. Working in different media, both Handy and Janzen rely on inspiration from trees for their initial imagery. While Bredt abstracts tree forms so that the trunks, branches, and leaves recede and emerge as interpretable forms, Tom photographs in local forests, primarily the nearby Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge, in a way that emphasizes detail, shape, and space.

Thomas E. Janzen has made fine-art photographic images since his father taught him to use a traditional manual camera as a young boy. His work has been displayed at the de Cordova Sculpture Park and Museum (video), the Griffin Museum of Photography, the Photographic Resource Center, Maynard ArtSpace, WGBH, and Concord Center for the Visual Arts. Tom lives in Maynard, MA.

Bredt Handy was a printmaker and book artist before turning to abstract painting. She has exhibited recently at Bromfield Gallery, Brookline Center for the Arts, Fort Point Arts Community gallery at the Envoy Hotel, Galatea, and Concord Center for the Visual Arts, as well as the Red Fox Gallery in Bedford, NY. She participates annually in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts sale. Bredt lives in Wayland, MA.
