Saturday, April 6, 2019 – Cow Common Lot (Rain date Sunday, April 7)

Please join Brian Harris Conservation Land Manager, in the parking lot at Cow Common at 6:30pm on Saturday, April 6, 2019. He will be available for questions or information regarding the birds he has observed but in particular the American Woodcock.

American Woodcock are most active from just before dusk and then just before dawn until they retire back to the woods and fields. The males perform very conspicuous displays, giving a buzzy peent call, then launching into the air. Their erratic display flight includes a distinctive, twittering flight sound and ends with a steep dive back to the ground.

Wayland’s conservation properties are some of the better places in the state to witness the woodcocks perform their spring courtship displays.

  • Parking – Meet at the lot along RT.27 directly across the street from the North Cemetery. There is a small white conservation sign on the south entrance marking the property access
  • Trails will be wet so appropriate foot wear is highly suggested
  • The walk can be anywhere from .25 miles to around a mile depending on where the birds are concentrated
