The night sky has called out to many people over the years: poets, dreamers, and of course, scientists. But for millennia it kept its secrets to itself, until man built powerful telescopes to see what was going on in the heavens. One such enthralled person, taken in by the unknown depths in that blackness, was Henrietta Leavitt.  Her story is not well known, often the case with notable women. She was a gifted, passionate scientist at a time when there was no place for women with passion to be scientists, particularly in astronomy, as the sensitive and expensive equipment was housed in “shrines” run by patriarchal universities. And yet, working at the Harvard Observatory, initially relegated to doing “woman’s work” for the staff, Henrietta ultimately prevailed, and made a discovery critical to 20th-century astronomy. The night sky hasn’t looked the same since.

The cast for the show includes: Jennifer Shea (Lowell), Shawna Ciampa (Billerica), Lea Oppedisano (Hopkinton), Anne Damon (Medford), and Craig Ciampa (Billerica).  The director, Celia Couture, is from Tewksbury.

This production is supported in part by a grant from the Wayland Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
