Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music Spring Concert on May 4th

Spring has sprung, and it’s time for the Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music (SVNHM) 2019 Spring Concert, to take place on Saturday, May 4th, at 3 p.m. The auditorium at the Wayland Middle School (201 Main Street, Wayland) will be the site of the concert, which will showcase the work of musicians of varying ages and levels of experience. The concert will begin with 3 selections performed by the swing band, including Sammy Nestico’s bright, uplifting piece, “Sudden Sam”, Duke Ellington’s familiar and jazzy “Satin Doll”, and Bob Washut’s “El Rito de Vida”, a “funky cha-cha” that will have audiences moving in their seats The string ensemble will play several pieces, including Handel’s “Harmonious Blacksmith Suite” (a collection of four popular movements from three different works), “Russian Sailors Dance” (Reinhold Glière’s best-known work), and a fun, traditional American piece called “Flop-Eared Mule”. The woodwind choir will offer two pieces by the well-known English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams – “Winter’s Willow: A Country Song”, and “Folksongs from Somerset”. Finally, the concert band will present, among others, Mark Williams’ stately “The Swashbuckler’s March”, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Sea Songs”, and excerpts from Ferde Grofé’s classic “Grand Canyon Suite”. The concert will conclude with a rousing sing-along to “God Bless America”.

Attendees can get to know the musicians and conductors during our “meet and greet” immediately after the concert, where a variety of refreshments will be served. There is no charge for attending the concert, although donations are gratefully accepted—Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is a 501(c)(3) arts organization, so donations are tax deductible. Concert goers will even be able to “buy a kiss” (candy, that is!) for your favorite musicians!

In addition to its two major concerts during the year, SVNHM’s ensembles perform in other venues. A recent performance at Heritage Framingham exemplifies the organization’s commitment to providing entertainment for senior living communities in the local area. On July 11th, our summer band will again play in the Wayland Council on Aging’s Summer Community Concert Series (7:00 p.m. on the lawn behind the Wayland Town Building). In addition, frequently some members have taken part in two holiday events – accompanying Christmas carolers at First Parish Church in Wayland, and a Christmas concert at Russell’s Garden Center in Wayland.

Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is always looking for new members – especially for our beginner classes in the fall. Whether you are well-versed at playing an instrument, have never played and don’t even know how to read those little black marks on the paper, or are somewhere in between, our string ensemble or band is for you. Our credos are: “Your Best is Good Enough!” and “It is never too late!”. For more information, e-mail Diane Muffitt at muffitt@svnhm.org, call her at 978-261-5065, go to www.svnhb.org, or just show up for the concert. We look forward to meeting you!!!!!
