Wayland Historical Society presents Mobile Homes: House Moving, May 15

Join the Wayland Historical Society on May 15, 2019 at 7:30 pm at the Grout- Heard House as we round out our year with a brief annual meeting followed by a brief talk and exhibits on house moving in Wayland.

A glimpse into what’s ahead… The Grout-Heard House, parts of which date to 1740, is back on its original site. The House was first moved to Old Sudbury Road (near the current condos and shopping center) in 1878 to make room for a new Town Hall. By the 1950s, Raytheon owned the Grout-Heard House (now located on its property) and eventually gave the building to the newly-formed Wayland Historical Society (founded 1954.) When the Town Hall was torn down in 1957, the Wayland Historical Society raised money to return the House to its original site. In 1962, the House, after considerable controversy, was moved back to where it had started life over 200 years earlier. While other Wayland houses have been moved, the double move is unique.
