Learn about Pollinators with Sudbury Valley Trustees

Pollinators play a key role behind the scenes in our natural ecosystems, keeping plant populations healthy, which in turn become the food sources for wildlife and people. In recent years, there has been a sharp decline in the population of native pollinators, due to habitat loss, pesticides, and competition from non-native honey bees.

In 2016, Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) began a new project – Places for Pollinators  – to improve monarch butterfly and other native pollinator habitat along the Sudbury River. On local landscapes from Wayland and Framingham, to our headquarters at Wolbach Farm in Sudbury, volunteers and staff have turned lawn areas and patches overgrown with invasives into thriving native plant habitats suitable for pollinators to rest and forage.

This summer, SVT is hosting opportunities for visitors to tour new pollinator habitats and learn more about the lifecycle and needs of these important insects. On July 9 and July 13, SVT Director of Stewardship Laura Mattei is offering Butterfly Forays, guided trail walks at Greenways Conservation Area in Wayland. On July 20, SVT Land Stewardship Coordinator/AmeriCorps member Trevor Nelson is offering a brief indoor presentation on the importance of native bees, and pollinator plantings that support thriving bee populations, followed by a tour of the pollinator meadow at Wolbach Farm. Space is limited, so visit www.svtweb.org/calendar for details and registration.
