ADULT PROGRAMS

  • Ukulele Club with Mark and Zoe Hughes. The Wayland Ukulele Club is for any adult (ages 16+) who wants to have fun with music.  All skill levels are welcome.  Starting with easy chords and tunes, we’ll learn songs from across the musical spectrum, from oldies to modern pop.  BYOU.  Wayland Library has four ukuleles  available to borrow for 3 weeks at a time, but we can’t guarantee their availability.  If ours are checked out, other local libraries lending ukuleles include Framingham, Weston, and Wellesley.  Registration required.  Limit 20 students.  Tuesdays, September 17 – October 22 (except October 1) from 7:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Shibori Tie-Dye Workshop. Learn the art of Shibori —a Japanese shape resist dye technique—in which one creates a resistance pattern using wood blocks, rubber bands, and popsicle sticks, then dips the fabric in traditional indigo dye.  Limit 10 participants.  Ages 16 and up.  Wear old clothes as the dye can stain.  We’ll provide all materials, including a white cotton flour sack towel to dye.  If you have a small item like a t-shirt or pillowcase that you would like bring from home, it should be white and made of natural fibers—cotton, linen, hemp.  Friday, September 20 from 12:00-2:00 p.m.
  • ESOL Tutor Training. Have you ever thought about volunteering to tutor someone in English?  There’s a great need for tutors, and you can make an enormous difference in someone’s life.  Program Director Ginny Steel will lead a training workshop on five Monday evenings.  The only cost is for a textbook (about $20).  For more information or to enroll, call Ginny at 508-358-7517 or email her at virginia@thesteels.com.  Monday, September 23 and 30, October 7, 21 and 28 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.
  • AUTHOR TALKS
    • Massachusetts in the Woman Suffrage Movement. Barbara Berenson gives the Commonwealth’s suffragists long-overdue attention.  Monday, September 16 at 7 p.m.
    • The Beantown Girls. Jane Healey reads from and discusses her novel about three friends from Boston who join the Red Cross in 1944.  Thursday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m.
    • The Karl Muck Scandal. Melissa Burrage tells the story of how BSO conductor Muck fell victim to anti-German prejudice during the First World War.  Wednesday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m.

BABY AND PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

  • Weekly Storytimes
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) Tuesdays, Sept. 17; Oct. 1, 8, 15, and 22 at 10:30 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Thursdays, Sept. 12, 19 and 26;  Oct 10 and Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m.
  • New! Kids Yoga. Sonia Gomez from Serfi Yoga will give a yoga class for children, toddlers to age 5. Thursday, September 12, 1:30-2:15 p.m.
  • Music & Movement. Ms. Carly will lead kids and caregivers in upbeat songs, dances, and stretches. For walkers to age 5. Monday, September 16, 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Storytime with Corbyn. Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor!  Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and his owner Helen will join us. For ages 3 and up. Thursday, September 19, 10:30 a.m.
  • Zumba. Rhythm and dance program for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old. Led by Hayley Chizinksy of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 10:30-11:00 a.m.
  • Pop-Up Playtime. Drop in for a morning of pretend play, early literacy activities, and sensory fun for little ones and their caregivers. For children babies to 3 years old, with caregiver. Monday, September 30, 10:30-11:30 a.m.

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS

  • Rainforest Reptiles. Lizards, snakes, alligators and more! A herpetologist from Rainforest Reptiles will bring live reptiles to the library and teach children about these fascinating creatures, and how they have adapted to their natural habitats. This is an Early Release Day special event. For ages 4 and up. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2:00-3:00 p.m.
  • Drop-in Craft: Kindness Rocks. Children are invited to decorate their own kindness rocks.  Remember: There is only one you! Let’s make this world better, together.You can bring your own rock, or paint rocks we have provided.  If you would like, you can leave one painted rock here for a rock display in the garden in front of the library. This project is inspired by Linda Kranz’s book Only One You. For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, September 25, 3:00-4:30 p.m.

FOR TEENS

  • Teen Open House: Launching our new Teen Loft! Teens! You are invited to an Open House to celebrate the opening of the Teen Loft on the library’s mezzanine. There will be pizza, snacks, and a Teen Jeopardy contest, with prizes. Remember, this year you can take the school bus to the library (if your parents have purchased a bus pass). For teens in grades 6 and up. Thursday, September 19, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Comic Book Workshop with Rachel Maguire. Local artist and educator Rachel Maguire will teach teens how to draw their own comics. For teens in grades 6 and up. Saturday, September 21, 3:00-4:00 p.m. Register online here.

FOR FAMILIES: WCPA Story and Service Event. In honor of childhood cancer awareness month, the WCPA and the Wayland Library are partnering with One Mission to collect donations and package gifts for children fighting cancer! Please join us for a kid-friendly story time and hands-on service project. NEW TEEN LOFT NOW OPEN. The Teen Loft is officially open! We are celebrating with an Open House! Please join us for light refreshments in the Loft. The Friends of the Wayland Public Library and the Library would like to thank Middlesex Savings Bank for their generous donation of $15,000, which helped make the Teen Loft possible.

SEEKING PARENT VOLUNTEERS FOR GIRLS WHO CODE CLUBS. We are seeking parent volunteers to facilitate our Girls Who Code clubs.  We need one more volunteer for the Girls Who Code Club for girls in grades 3 -5, and one more volunteer for the GWC club for girls in grades 6 and up. WAYLAND SCHOOL BUS WILL HAVE A STOP AT THE LIBRARY THIS FALL! This year, a certain number of seats on Bus 3 will be allocated each day for middle and high school students who’d like to stop at the library after school.  This option is for students who are registered to ride the bus and have purchased a bus pass.
