A program sponsored by the Native Pollinator Task Force of the MetroWest Conservation Alliance (MCA) will describe the threats facing native pollinating insects and will explain how homeowners can modify their gardens to help these bees and butterflies survive.

“What’s the Buzz? The People-Plant-Pollinator Connection” is scheduled for Sunday, November 17, 2-4pm at the Southborough Senior Center at 9 Cordaville Road, Southborough, MA. Residents from all towns are welcome. Admission is free, and registration is appreciated. Visit svtweb.org/MCA to register.

“Global species extinction is not happening in some far off place,” says Freddie Gillespie, chair of the Task Force. “It is happening right here, right now in our own backyards. But there are steps we can take in our yards, neighborhoods, and towns that can help reverse the trend. Every yard matters.”

During the “What’s the Buzz?” program, Dr. Robert J. Gegear, a biologist and a professor at UMass Dartmouth, will describe the intricate and interdependent relationship between plants and pollinators. His research reveals why all of us should help make Massachusetts a better place for the pollinating insects that are responsible for our local food crop yields and environmental health.

The MCA is a coalition of conservation groups from communities in MetroWest. The Native Pollinator Task Force aims to shed more light on the issues facing our native pollinators and encourages homeowners to create more habitat for pollinators. The ultimate goal is to establish 30,000 acres of pollinator habitat in the region in the coming years.
