ADULT PROGRAMS

  • The Great Presenters: The Magic of Silk Painting. Longtime silk artist Kathy Defina speaks on the rich history of silk painting and its growth in the wearable art industry.  Tuesday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Author Talk: The Lamps of AlbarracinIn Edith Scott Saavedra’s debut novel, a Sephardic girl’s account of the arrival of the Spanish Inquisition into the Kingdom of Aragon brings alive the historical figure of Brianda de Besante, an unsung heroine of resistance to the Inquisition. It also vividly portrays the multicultural Spain of the early Renaissance.  Once a student of Spanish literature at Harvard, Saavedra has since had a distinguished career as an international lawyer, business consultant and now author.  Wednesday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m.
  • New Tutors Trained in Wayland Library’s ESOL Program. Immigrants in our area who want to improve their fluency in English now have greater opportunities.  Ten generous and enthusiastic people have recently completed a training course and are now certified to be tutors of ESOL.  They will work one-on-one with learners from all over the world.  The next free tutor-training course starts on February 24.  Tutors do not need to know another language, nor every detail of English grammar.  For more information, contact Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or at virginia@thesteels.com.
  • Wanted: Art for Our Exhibition Spaces in January. Do you have work you’d like to show?  Or know someone who does?  Our foyer can accommodate a small number of pieces and the Raytheon Room has ample display space.  For information or an application, contact Elizabeth Bradley at the Library.
  • Thank You from the Friends. The Friends of the Wayland Library extend a heartfelt thanks to all the patrons and volunteers who made the recent book sale a success.  A special note of appreciation to members who donated books and baked goods and especially those who donated their time before and during the sale.  Thanks also to everyone who came to shop and support the Library, and to Mastodon Moving for helping us move all those books!

  • Dystopian/Sci-Fi. Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie.  Wednesday, December 11 at 7 p.m. in the mezzanine.
  • Cookbook Club. It’s our annual potluck!  No book involved—just make a recipe and bring it to share. Thursday, December 12 at 6 p.m.
  • Noon. Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue.  Friday, December 13.

BABY AND PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

  • Weekly Storytimes
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) Tuesdays, Dec. 3, 10, 17 and 24 at 10:30 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) Thursdays, Dec. 12 and 26 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs for young children. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation! For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with caregiver. Thursday, December 5, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Prewalkers Lapsit. Together we will learn fun and interactive ways to promote early brain development. Our group includes soft songs and lap bounces, which encourage early communication. Facilitated by Beverly Mobilia of Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages newborn to 1 year, or pre-walkers, with caregiver. Wednesday, Nov. Dec. 4, 11:30-12 p.m.
  • Inclusive Playgroup: Stories, Songs, and Sign. This interactive, inclusive music and literacy group is for young children at all levels of communication and ability. Facilitated by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. For ages newborn to 3 years, with caregiver. Wednesday, December 11, 11:30-12:15 p.m.
  • Kids Yoga. Sonia Gomez from Serfi Yoga will give a yoga class for children, toddlers to age 5. Thursday, December 12, 1:30-2:15 p.m.
  • Storytime with Corbyn. Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor!  Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and his owner Helen will join us. For ages 3 and up. Thursday, December 19, 10:30 a.m.

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS

  • Lego Club. Children will make fabulous creations out of legos. This month’s theme: Magical Kingdoms! For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, December 4, 3:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Drop-in Holiday and Winter Crafts. Join us to make festive holiday and winter crafts. Program led by librarian Elise Katz. For ages 4 and up. Wednesday, December 11, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Kids Chess Club. Children will learn chess and get tips to improve their game. This is a beginner’s club for children with little or no chess experience. Wayland High School Junior Miranda Lee will lead the club. We will be meeting once a month. For children ages 7 and up. Thursday, December 12, 4:00-4:45 p.m.
  • 4th/5th Grade Parent/Child Book Group. This book discussion group is for 4th and 5th graders with a parent. December’s book is The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser. Tuesday, December 17, 7:00-8:00 p.m.
  • Dog Man Afternoon. Celebrate the release of the latest Dog Man book with an afternoon of fun inspired by everyone’s favorite half dog, half police officer! Drop in to create comics, play games, and attempt to foil Petey’s latest scheme by following the clues in a scavenger hunt. For ages 5 and up. Wednesday, December 18, 3:30-5:00 p.m.

FOR TEENS

  • 6th Grade Parent/Child Book Group. This book discussion group is for 6tj graders with a parent. December’s book is Scar Island by Dan Gemeinhart. Need a copy? Come to the Children’s Room and check one out. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 7:00-8:00 p.m. We will meet in the Teen Loft.
  • TAB Meeting: Cookie Decorating. Teens! Come to our Teen Advisory Board meeting and Cookie Decorating Party! Snack and let us know what programs YOU would like at the Wayland Public Library. We will meet in the Teen Loft. (Gluten free options available.) For teens in grades 6 and up.  Friday, December 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Holiday Gift Wrapping Party for Teens. Bring in your holiday gifts and wrap them in plenty of time for the holidays. Librarian Laura will lead the gift wrapping workshop and WHS student Jaelin will teach calligraphy for those of you who want to make the gift tags extra special. The library will supply gift wrap and ribbon. Thursday, December 19, 7:00-8:00 p.m.

FOR FAMILIES

Family Holiday Singalong with David Polansky. As a part of the Wayland Center Holiday Open House, local musician David Polansky will lead a Family Holiday Singalong for all ages upstairs in the round room of the Library.  In addition to vocals, Polansky will play the keyboard and the trumpet.  Come and sing your favorite holiday songs and learn some new ones.  Refreshments will be served.  This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Wayland Public Library.  Sunday, December 8 from 3 to 3:45 p.m.
