Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music Winter Concert, December 7

What do Mozart, Beethoven, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the mysterious Piérre Defecto have in common? The answer: Their music will be part of Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music’s 2019 Winter Concert on Saturday, December 7th, at 3 p.m. The auditorium at the Wayland Middle School (201 Main Street, Wayland) will be the site of the concert, which will showcase the work of musicians of varying ages and levels of experience. The concert will begin with 2 selections performed by the swing band – the Gershwins’ “Embraceable You”, one of their most frequently recorded songs, and Paul Baker’s “The Mudbug Strut”, an upbeat Dixieland style piece guaranteed to get your musical juices flowing. The string orchestra will play several pieces, including “And the Glory of the Lord” from the Messiah, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, and those familiar selections from “Fiddler on the Roof”.

The woodwind choir will offer Mozart’s “Alleluia” from Exultate Jubliate, K. 165, and William Byrd’s “Pavan”. Finally, the concert band will perform a variety of numbers, including “Lexington March” (a classic example of a “carousel” march), “Oh, Brother”, which presents variations on a very familiar theme authored by our own “Piérre Defecto”, the well-known “Cotton-Eyed Joe”, and selections from Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!”, now making a Broadway comeback.

Come get to know us during our “meet and greet” immediately after the concert, where a variety of refreshments will be served. There is no charge for attending the concert, although donations are gratefully accepted–we are a 501(c)(3) arts organization, so donations are tax deductible. You will even be able to “buy a kiss” (candy, that is!) for your favorite musicians.

In addition to its two major concerts during the year, SVNHM’s ensembles perform in other venues, including the Wayland Council on Aging Summer Community Concert Series, and at various senior living facilities in the area. On Sunday, December 8th, at 4:30 p.m., some of us will be accompanying at the First Parish Wayland Community Caroling. We will also be playing carols at Russell’s Garden Center from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14th. The public is invited to both of these events, so please stop by!

Sudbury Valley New Horizons Music is always looking for new members – especially for our beginner classes in the fall. For more information, e-mail Diane Muffitt at muffitt@svnhm.org, call her at 978-261-5065, go to www.svnhb.org, or just show up for the concert.
