ADULT PROGRAMS

  • Great Presenters: The History and Future of Farming and Conservation in New England. Brian Donahue will look at the development of farming, woodlands, and conservation along the Sudbury River from pre-European times to today.  He’ll then discuss the possible future of farming in New England, in a changing world.  Donahue is Associate Professor of American Environmental Studies, and sits on the boards of the Thoreau Farm Trust and The Land Institute.  Tuesday, January 7 at 7:30 p.m.
  • A Conversation about a Plant-Based Lifestyle. Over the last few years, health coach and yoga instructor Nancy Wind has embarked on a seasonal plant-based lifestyle, embracing her passion for seasonal cooking.  Would you like to know how you can improve your own health and wellness by eating more plants, legumes, and other non-animal products?  Are you aware of the impact a plant-based diet has on our environment?  Come share your thoughts and learn from others, with Nancy’s guidance.  Wednesday, January 8 at 7 p.m.
  • Knitting Meetup. Bring your knitting projects to work on and share, and get help from librarian (and veteran knitter) Sarah Hogan.  Enjoy tea, lemonade, and snacks.  Recommended for ages 8 and up.  Children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult willing to help.  Wednesday, January 8 at 2 p.m. in the mezzanine
  • Craft Supply Swap. Looking for “new to you” craft items and ideas? Want to reduce your stash of leftover craft supplies?  Donate them January 13-16 at the reference desk upstairs.  (For large donations, please contact Courtney ahead of time.)  Be sure to pick up a swap ticket when you donate.  Then on Friday, January 17 from 10-12 p.m., browse the swap tables at the library and take home the perfect inspiration for your next project.  Stop by 12-2 p.m. if you haven’t donated.  Any supplies not swapped will be used by the library for programs, given to charity, or recycled.
  • The Story of the USS Indianapolis. On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.  Due to an incredible series of blunders by the Navy Department, she was not even missed for almost five days.  During that time, the 900 men who had abandoned ship endured terrible physical and mental hardships.  Only 317 survived.  Amateur historian Bob Begin explores the ensuing public outrage and years of debate.  Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Family Trivia Night. Fun, pizza and snacks for ages 6-106.  We’ll play 4 rounds of 5 questions each.  Categories may include current affairs, pop culture, sports, history, science and everything in between.  Watch our Facebook page for clues.  Registration is required—sign up your team of 2-6 people today! Thursday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Automatic Renewals Make for a Happy Re-New Year. Starting January 2, anything you have checked out will renew automatically two days before it’s due.  That is, unless: 1) there’s a hold on it for another patron; 2) the Library doesn’t allow this kind of item to renew (e.g. hotspots); 3) you’ve already maxed out renewals on it; 4) your borrowing privileges have been suspended.  If an item has renewed automatically, you’ll get an email.  Or you can check your account online.  Now it’s even easier to use the library!
