ADULT PROGRAMS

  • Craft Supply Swap. Looking for “new to you” craft items and ideas? Want to reduce your stash of leftover craft supplies?  Donate your leftover crafting supplies January 13-16 upstairs at the reference desk.  (For large donations, please contact Courtney ahead of time.)  Be sure to pick up a swap ticket when you donate.  Then on Friday, January 17 from 10-12 p.m., browse the swap tables at the library and take home the perfect inspiration for your next project.  Stop by 12-2 p.m. if you haven’t donated.  Any supplies not taken by swappers will be used by the library for programs, donated to charity, or recycled.
  • The Story of the USS Indianapolis. On July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.  Due to an incredible series of blunders by the Navy Department, she was not even missed for almost five days.  During that time, the 900 men who had abandoned ship endured terrible physical and mental hardships.  Only 317 survived.  Amateur historian Bob Begin explores the ensuing public outrage and years of debate.  Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Family Trivia Night. Fun, pizza and snacks for ages 6-106.  We’ll play 4 rounds of 5 questions each.  Categories may include current affairs, pop culture, sports, history, science and everything in between.  Watch our Facebook page for clues.  Registration is required—sign up your team of 2-6 people today! Thursday, January 16 at 6:30 p.m.
  • Author Talk: Choosing College with Michael Horn. The rankings, metrics, analytics, college visits, and advice that we use don’t give students and families the information and context they need to make such a high-stakes decision about whether and where to get an education.   Choosing College strips away the noise to help you understand why you’re going to school, and thus make better choices.  Michael Horn speaks and writes about education and serves a senior partner for Entangled Solutions, a strategy consultancy for the education ecosystem.  Tuesday, January 21 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Help Get Out the Vote. The program will begin with an excerpt from Suppressed: The Fight to Vote, a new documentary by Robert Greenwald about voter suppression in the 2018 Georgia election, followed by a brief, facilitated discussion.  Then attendees will have an opportunity, if they wish, to fill out postcards encouraging eligible voters who have been purged to re-enroll and vote.  Discussion leaders Joel Silberman and Jean Milburn are Wayland residents who share a passion for making every voice heard.  Friday, January 24 at 10:00 a.m.
  • Automatic Renewals Make for a Happy Re-New Year. Starting January 2, anything you have checked out will renew automatically two days before it’s due.  That is, unless: 1) there’s a hold on it for another patron; 2) the Library doesn’t allow this kind of item to renew (e.g. hotspots); 3) you’ve already maxed out renewals on it; 4) your borrowing privileges have been suspended.  If an item has renewed automatically, you’ll get an email.  Or you can check your account online.  Now it’s even easier to use the library!
