Wayland parents tests positive for COVID-19; Loker and Middle School closed Wednesday

The following was sent to the School email list by Superintendent Unobskey

Dear Wayland Staff and Families,

I wanted to share with you updated information about COVID-19 and a positive-tested case within our community.

Tonight a Wayland parent of two students, one at Loker and one at the Middle School, informed us that the parent had tested positive for Coronavirus. The parent had been exposed last week and had chosen to self-quarantine since the exposure. The students showed no symptoms of the illness but also self-quarantined beginning Monday of this week.

In consultation with the Wayland Department of Health and in keeping with practices followed by other schools in the Boston area, we have made the decision to close both the Middle School and Loker tomorrow, Wednesday, March 11, in order to conduct enhanced cleaning using a deep disinfection protocol. Because neither student had exhibited any symptoms and had not been in school since last week, we do not have reason to believe that the students were contagious or that students and staff in the two buildings were exposed to COVID-19. Therefore, based on direction from the Wayland Department of Health, we do not see the need for any students or staff in Loker or the Middle School to consider self-quarantining at this time.

Happy Hollow, Claypit and the High School will have school as normal. Based on guidance from the Commissioner of Education, we will be treating tomorrow as a “snow” day for Loker and the Middle School, which means that both schools will need to make up the day, per state guidelines. We do not yet have a finalized plan for what that make-up will look like; as soon as we do have more information, we will let you know.

If we have updated information, we will share that as quickly as possible. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I very much appreciate your flexibility as we manage this challenging situation.

Please free to contact me with questions at arthur_unobskey@wayland.k12.ma.us. Tomorrow (Wednesday) Brian Jones, Betsy Gavron and I will be present at the Central Office to answer any questions as well.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership.

 Sincerely,

Arthur Unobskey
