The following statement was read at the start of the March 16, 2020 meeting:

Statement of Support and Thanks

The Board of Selectmen recognizes that this is a highly unusual time requiring extraordinary effort of staff, volunteers, businesses, faith communities, organizations, and citizens.

First, staff has been working in over-drive. There has not been a standard workday for the last ten days. Work starts at 6am and for some, ends near midnight – based on the email time stamps I’ve seen. The past two weekends have provided no break.

Second, board and committee chairs and members have been helping talk through processes, proofreading documents, answering emails, calling emergency meetings, and supporting staff – all within the Open Meeting Law.

Third, the community of Wayland has been sending us ideas with good intent and not anger. Their motivation is clearly the greater good of community health. We are thankful for their patience as we respond.

Businesses are trying to find creative ways to manage this difficult situation. We thank them for adapting, and acknowledge the frustration that good intentions are quickly proving to be insufficient.

Organizations have cancelled long planned events. Faith communities are finding creative technologies to offer services on line.

And there is even a Wayland Coronavirus Community Support Program to help those who need it. This does not surprise us. Wayland has come together, as it always does in times of personal or civic crisis.

Thank you, all.
