2020 Annual Town Election Will Take Place Tuesday, June 9, 2020
In response to the State of Emergency and concerns about COVID-19 and its implications on election administration, the Governor signed a law authorizing the Board of Selectmen to vote to postpone the local election, which was scheduled for March 31, 2020. At its meeting on March 24, 2020, the Board of Selectmen voted to reschedule the election to June 9, 2020. The ballot includes the annual election for certain Town Officers and a debt exclusion question for the Loker Elementary School roof replacement.
New Voter Registration Deadline is Friday, May 29, 2020
The law establishes a new voter registration deadline of 8:00 pm on the 10th day before the rescheduled election. The new voter registration deadline is Friday, May 29, 2020. That day, the Town Clerk will be open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and hold additional office hours from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Absentee Voting and Early Voting By Mail is Taking Place Now
In light of COVID-19 recommended safety measures for higher risk individuals and social distancing guidelines, the law provides for two alternatives to voting in person:
- First, the law allows any person taking precautions related to COVID-19 to vote by absentee ballot. Any person may apply for an absentee ballot by filling out the absentee ballot application available on the Town Clerk’s web site at www.wayland.ma.us/town-clerk or in-person in the Town Building front vestibule. You may also request an absentee ballot by writing a letter to the Town Clerk. Be sure to include your name and address, the election(s) for which you are requesting a ballot, and your signature. If you need the ballot mailed somewhere other than your home, be sure to provide that address.
- Second, the law provides for early voting by mail. Any person may obtain an early voting ballot by sending a signed request to the Town Clerk’s office or by filling out and returning the early voting application also available on the Town Clerk’s website at www.wayland.ma.us/town-clerk or in-person in the Town Building front vestibule. As with absentee ballot applications, any written signed request is acceptable.
All applications for an absentee ballot or an early voting ballot must be received by the Town Clerk before noon on Monday June 8, 2020, the last business day before the election. Applications may be mailed, emailed (including sending a picture of the completed application), faxed, or by appointment for other arrangements.
All absentee and early voting ballots must be returned by the 8 pm on election day to the Town Clerk’s Office.
In-Person Absentee Voting By Appointment and During Extended Business Hours
Voters who wish to in-person absentee vote may do so during regular Town Building business hours and extended hours. Voters should contact the Clerk’s Office at (508) 358-3630 to make arrangements to vote during regular business hours. The Clerk’s Office will also hold extended hours for in-person absentee voting. Voters do not need to call the Clerk’s Office to schedule a time during extended hours:
- Friday, May 22 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Saturday, May 23 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Friday, May 29 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- Saturday, May 30 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
