ADULT SERVICES

  • Author Talk: The Smallest Lights in the Universe. Ten years ago, MIT astrophysicist and MacArthur Fellow Sara Seager had a perfect life.  Then suddenly, it all came crashing down.  Her story is the journey of inner and outer space: the climb out of the abyss and the search for another Earth.  Ultimately, it’s about the quest for meaning and togetherness—something we all share.  Register here or through the Events menu on our home page.  Wednesday, August 5 at 7 p.m.
  • Assabet Co-op Market: A Community-Owned Grocery Store. The Assabet Co-op Market is opening a full-service grocery store in Maynard that prioritizes local food producers and is owned by almost 1,300 local residents. Lorne Bell, the Co-op’s director of outreach, will explain how community-owned grocery stores are revolutionizing our food system and building thriving, more sustainable local economies.  Register here or through the Events menu on our home page.  Thursday, August 6 at 7 p.m.
  • Film Discussion: The Story of Plastics. With engaging original animation, archival industry footage beginning in the 1930s, and first-person accounts of the unfolding emergency, this sweeping documentary examines the  complex crisis of plastics pollution that is increasingly affecting the planet’s and its inhabitants’ well-being.  Sign up to view the film on your own at www.storyofplastic.org, then join us for the discussion via Zoom.  Register here or through the Events menu on our home page.  Thursday, August 20 at 7 p.m.
  • Schedule Your Hold Pickups Online. We have great new software that makes pickups easier for everyone.  When you get the email saying your hold has come in, just click on the scheduling link.  You can then select the day and time you want to make your pickup.  We’ll have a corresponding calendar on our end that’ll tell us your choice.  Of course, we’ll still call you if you don’t use email notification.
  • Libraries Are For Everyone. Please take a look at our “Read Against Racism” page, which includes the Library’s statement in response to the death of George Floyd, as well as multiple resource lists for kids, teens and adults who want to learn more about racism in America.  Feel free to email us if you have something to add to our lists, and watch our calendar for upcoming relevant library programs.
  • Noon Book Group. David Mitchell’s Black Swan Green tracks a single year in what is, for 13-year-old Jason Taylor, the sleepiest village in muddiest Worcestershire in a dying Cold War England, 1982.  But the 13 chapters create an exquisitely observed world that is anything but sleepy.  Pointed, funny, profound, left field, elegiac, and painted with the stuff of life, Black Swan Green is a glorious novel of boyhood on the cusp of adulthood.  Email amoore@minlib.net for the Zoom link.  Friday, August 14.
