Discovery Museum announces virtual 2021 Speaker Series; series kicks off with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum on kids, race, and racism on January 27

Tatum event to be moderated by WBUR’s Tiziana Dearing

 The Discovery Museum Speaker Series kicks off its 9th year with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President Emerita of Spelman College who is widely known for her expertise on race relations and as a thought leader in higher education. “Talking to Kids about Race and Racism: A Conversation with Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum,” will be moderated by Tiziana Dearing, host of WBUR’s Radio Boston.

Dr. Tatum is a clinical psychologist whose thirteen years as the president of Spelman College (2002-2015) were marked by innovation and growth and her visionary leadership was recognized in 2013 with the Carnegie Academic Leadership Award. The author of several books including the national bestseller Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? (now in a new 2017 20th anniversary edition) and Can We Talk About Race? And Other Conversations in an Era of School Resegregation (2007), Tatum is a sought-after speaker on the topics of racial identity development, race and education, strategies for creating inclusive campus environments, and higher education leadership. In 2005 Dr. Tatum was awarded the prestigious Brock International Prize in Education for her innovative leadership in the field. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association, she was the 2014 recipient of the APA Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology. Tiziana Dearing, host of Radio Boston on WBUR, has been a commentator and contributor to WBUR for more than a decade and has contributed to a number of other regional and national news outlets. Prior to joining the Radio Boston team, Tiziana was a professor at Boston College in the School of Social Work, where she taught social innovation and leadership. A longtime anti-poverty advocate, Tiziana also ran Boston Rising, a startup antipoverty fund to end generational poverty in Boston and was the first woman president of Catholic Charities for the Archdiocese of Boston. She’s won a number of awards in the city, including a Pinnacle Award from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and Boston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40.

  • Thursday, March 18, “Grandparenting a Child with Autism,” with Charlie Washburn, retired Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Very Special Arts (now called Open Door Arts) and grandparent of a child with autism, and Donna Danielewski, Senior Director of the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media at WGBH and grandmother of a child with autism.
  • Wednesday, April 28, “The Addiction Inoculation: Raising Healthy Kids in a Culture of Dependence,” with Jessica LaheyNew York Times best-selling author.
  • Tuesday, June 1, “Addressing Bias in Children’s Literature,” with Grace Lin, New York Times best-selling author and illustrator.
  • Thursday, October 21, “An Empowered Life for Children with Disabilities,” with Sara Minkara, Founder, Empowerment Through Integration
