ADULT SERVICES

  • Wayland Reads 2021. This year’s edition focuses on bestselling author Ibram X. Kendi’s How to Be an Antiracist.  Copies are available at the library.  There will be a number of discussion groups later this month.  Watch this space and waylandlibrary.org for further details.
  • From Seed to Table. Wayland’s own Renee Bolivar from Gardens by Renee will provide an overview of how to plan the growing season for an organic kitchen food garden. Learn about your planting options (raised beds, growing boxes, containers, etc.), where to get quality supplies and materials, best practices for managing your garden, and top tips for a successful harvest.  Register through the Events menu on our home page.  Sunday, March 7 at 3 p.m.
  • Chair Yoga with Nancy Wind. Yoga is for everyone.  Breathe, move, be present and relieve some of your stress.  We’ll be sitting on a chair and using it for support.  Nancy Wind is a health coach and 200-hour yoga instructor.  Register through the Events menu on our homepage.  Monday, March 8 at 7 p.m.
  • The Four-Billion-Year Story of Wayland. Drawing on his training as a geologist, Eamon McCarthy Earls will walk you through an exciting look at the physical history of Wayland from the formation of the planet to the present day. He will explore the landscapes, terrain, and fascinating stories of the ground beneath our feet.  Register through the Events menu on our homepage.  Tuesday, March 9 at 7 p.m.
  • Dystopian/Sci-Fi Book Group. This month’s discussion explores psychology, society, and human emotion in an alien world as portrayed in Ursula K. LeGuin’s classic, The Left Hand of Darkness.  Contact ekatz@minlib.net for the Zoom link.  Sunday, March 14 at noon.
  • Calling All Wayland Writers on Race and Equity. If you are a resident of Wayland and have written and been published on the topic of race equity (or know someone who is and has), please let us know.  We are seeking to pull together a bibliography of such works.  Join the august company of Wayland’s own Lydia Maria Child!
  • Big Return on Investment. In January, we circulated $232,393 worth of materials.  Our materials budget for the entire year is just $195,000.  Pretty darn good value for your tax dollar, if we say so ourselves.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

  • Singalong on Zoom with Jeannie Mack: Stories, Songs, and Sign. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation! Please register HERE or online on our eventkeeper calendar for the zoom link. We will send out lyrics to some of the songs in advance to help you sing along with your little one. For ages babies to 4 years, with adult. Thursday, March 4, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
  • Storytime on Zoom. Join Ms. Pam for stories songs, puppets, and crafts through zoom.  This interactive storytime encourages language development, socialization and fun. For ages 2.5 to 5 years.   • Weekly Facebook Live Storytimes with Ms. Carly. Join Ms. Carly for a Facebook Live storytime on the Wayland Public Library’s Facebook page. Babies through preschool age are invited to listen to stories, sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements. Tuesdays, March 9, 16, 23, and 30 at 10:30 a.m.
  • Bedtime Storytime on Facebook Live. Join Ms. Carly for a Virtual Bedtime Storytime on the Wayland Public Library’s Facebook page. Wear your pajamas and watch with a favorite stuffed animal if you want! Best for ages 0-5, but all kids and their caregivers are welcome. Wednesday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m.
  • Kids Yoga on FaceBook Live! Sonia Gomez from Serfi Yoga will give a yoga class for children, toddlers to age 5. Her class will stream on the Wayland Facebook page on Thursday, March 11, at 1:30 p.m

FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

  • The Tortoise and the Hare:  Zoom Storytime with Ms. Elise. Let’s explore this old fable, learn about Aesop and explore the intense world of competitions! Please register HERE for the zoom link. For ages 4 and up. Wednesday, March 10, at 3 p.m.
  • Kids Cooking Green on ZOOM: Eggs in a Basket. Yes, Dr. Seuss, there are green eggs, and brown eggs, and blue eggs. In this cooking workshop, led by Kids Cooking Green, children will take a short virtual trip to a local farm and learn about chickens and where eggs come from. After that, children (with adult supervision) will follow along and cook at home. For kids ages 3-6 with adult. Register HERE for the zoom link and to get the recipe. Participants supply their own ingredients. Kids Cooking Green is an innovative, hands-on cooking program for children. It’s about health, nutrition, food preparation, the environment and the full circle of benefits of local food and farming. Kids learn how to make healthy choices and develop their own cooking skills, all in a fun and memorable way. This event is funded in part through The Mind in the Making Grant, federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

  • Social Justice Storytime on ZOOM. Join Ms. Carly for a storytime that centers on social justice issues! This family friendly storytime will feature books, songs, and flannel boards that offer children and caregivers tools for meaningfully engaging with topics like anti-racism, LGBTQ+ rights, and the Black Lives Matter movement.   • How to Catch a Leprechaun?:  STEAM Storytime with Ms. Pam. In this storytime we will read about leprechauns and design and build our own leprechaun trap! For ages 4 and up.   • Dungeons & Dragons Club: Session Zero. Wayland Teens are invited to the first meeting of our new Dungeons & Dragons Club. Session Zero will include a quick overview of D&D, and a chance for players and the DM to get to know each other and determine what type of campaign they would like to have, as well as sharing any topics that they would like the campaign to avoid. Additionally, the DM will walk people through creating their characters. We hope to meet every other week going forward. Wayland High School Freshman Davis Gruber will be the Dungeon Master.
