News and Events from the Wayland Library, April 2, 2021

ADULT SERVICES

  • Wayland Reads Author Talk: Against Civility. According to author Alex Zamalin, the idea of civility has always been wielded to silence dissent, repress political participation, and justify violence upon people of color. Although many progressives today are urged to be more polite and thoughtful, citizens who care deeply about racial and socioeconomic equality need to abandon this concept of discreet politeness and instead more fully support disruptive actions and calls for liberation.  The author of several other books, Zamalin is the director of the African- American Studies Program and Assistant Professor of political science at the University of Detroit Mercy.  Register through our Events menu.  Sunday, April 11 at 3 p.m.
  • Wayland Reads Panel Discussion: Race, Monuments, and Memory. What does it mean to remove historical monuments?  What did they symbolize to the people who erected them? What do they mean to us today?  Addressing these questions and more are Stacen Goldman, Framingham History Center; Prof. Angel David Nieves of Northeastern U.; Shawn Quigly, National Park Service Ranger; and Prof. Kabria Baumgartner of the University of New Hampshire.  Register through our Events menu.  Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m.
  • Exploring a Human Rights Commission. Join us to understand what human rights commissions (HRC) are and how they foster a safe, welcoming community.  Given efforts are underway to create a municipal HRC in Wayland, Professor Martha Davis of Northeastern University’s School of Law, will share the merits of human rights commissions, what they do, and how they function effectively.  Register through our Events menu.  Tuesday, April 13 at 7 p.m.

  • 3D Printing is Back. All we need is the .stl file attached to an email that you’ll send to tkenney@minlib.net.  If you’re designing it yourself, there should be an “export” or “download as” option – use that, and then just make sure you’re selecting “.stl.”  If downloading an already made model, just attach the file to an email or send us the link.  Once it’s printed, we’ll contact you to arrange a pickup time.
