• 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s and other dementias cause changes in memory, thinking, and behavior that interfere with daily life.  The one-hour program covers typical age-related changes; common warning signs of Alzheimer’s; how to approach someone about memory concerns; early detection; the benefits of a diagnosis and the diagnostic process; and useful resources.  Presented by the Alzheimer’s Association.  Register through our Events menu.  Tuesday, May 25 at 7 p.m.
• Virtual Play Reading: Arsenic and Old Lace. In Joseph Kesselring’s classic black comedy, a drama critic discovers that his sweet little old aunts have a habit of poisoning elderly gentlemen and burying them in the cellar.  Join in the fun as we read it aloud in a Zoom gathering.  If you’d like to play a role, call the library to reserve a copy and arrange a pickup time.  We’ll assign parts (double-cast, no doubt) once everyone is assembled.  Register through our Events menu.  Thursday, May 27 at 7 p.m.
• Great Presenters: Race and Equity in the Suburbs. Even we want to talk about race, we often avoid it for fear of saying the wrong thing or being labeled as racist. In this interactive workshop, Rebecca Smoler will present strategies for engaging in conversations on race and racism, and provide resources on antiracism efforts in Wayland and the metrowest area.  Rebecca is a facilitator at Initiatives for Developing Equity and Achievement for Students (IDEAS) and a public school curriculum coordinator. She is also the co-founder of Wayland Community for Social Justice.  Register through our Events menu.  Tuesday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m.
• Tuesday Afternoons Now Open. As we inch towards opening fully, we’ve added Tuesdays 4:15-7:45 to our calendar.  Just call us to book an appointment for either browsing or computer use, or book it yourself through our Events menu.
• Book Club in a Bag. It’s the perfect way to get books to your club.  Ten paperbacks in a sturdy canvas tote, ready for you check out and distribute, with a great selection of current bestsellers and perennial favorites.  Just look under the Services menu on our home page for titles, then call us up to reserve one.
• New ESOL Tutors. Immigrants in our area who want to improve their competency in English now have greater opportunities.  Nine generous and enthusiastic people completed a training course in March and are now certified to be tutors of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages).  They’ll be working one-on-one remotely with learners from Korea, Guatemala, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico and China.  The next tutor training session will probably be in October.  For more information, contact Ginny Steel at 781-541-4919 or at virginia@thesteels.com. 
• Hoopla Bonus Borrows for May. Lots of great choices in all formats for kids and adults that won’t count against your monthly total or cost us anything.  Just log in to Hoopla and scroll down till you see the  Bonus Borrows logo.  Click on that and browse away, knowing the meter isn’t running.
• Check Out Our New Video Projector. It’s movie night in the backyard!  This compact projector connects to your laptop, tablet, phone, PC, or DVD player and is easy to operate, with a bright, crisp image 30”-200” inches away.  It also works with USB flash drive, PS4/XBOX/WII, media players (music, pictures, video, TXT), or headphones.  Combine it with our portable battery and take it on the road.  Just search the catalog for “video projector.”
• Get Crafty with Creativebug. Our newest database offers more than a thousand video classes in drawing, painting, sketchbooking, sewing, quilting, knitting, jewelry making, and much more, taught by top artists, designers, and crafters.  Just go to our Online Resources page and log in with your library card (Wayland patrons only).  A world of creativity awaits you.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

• Weekly Facebook Live Storytimes with Ms. Carly. Join Ms. Carly for a Facebook Live storytime on the Wayland Public Library’s Facebook page. Babies through preschool age are invited to listen to stories, sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements. Tuesdays, May 25, June 8, 15, 22, and 29 at 10:30 a.m.
• Outside Storytimes! Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities OUTSIDE on the lawn behind the library. Face masks are required for all participants during this program. We will assist in maintaining social distancing but encourage attendees to bring along a picnic blanket or a lawn chair. Registration is required. For ages 4 and up with an adult. • Outdoor STEAM TEAM. Join Ms. Pam for stories celebrating the sights and sounds of nature. Children will design and create their own wind chimes. We will meet outside on the lawn behind the library. • Outdoor Kids Craft: Patchwork Houses. Kids are invited for an afternoon of outdoor crafting on the library lawn! Each participant will be provided with their own set of collage materials for decorating a cardboard patchwork house. Face masks are required for all participants during this program. • Pop-Up Parking Lot Library.  Stop by the library on Wednesday afternoons between 1-4 p.m. for in-person browsing of popular and new materials, plus fresh air! Maintain 6 feet if there is a line. Wear a mask & hand sanitizer will be provided prior to browsing. Remember to bring your library card! Weather permitting.
• Curated Collections for Kids. Would you like a handpicked selection of books just right for your children? Call the Children’s Room at 508-358-2308 and we’ll pull together a bundle for you to pick up at your convenience. We’d love to hear from you!

SUMMER READING

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5 is Tails & Tales. We will be bringing you a blend of virtual and in-person (outside) activities featuring animals, real and imaginary. Highlights include a virtual magic show by Jungle Jim, virtual zookeeper chats with Buttonwood Park Zoo and Roger Williams Park Zoo, outdoor STEM and craft programs, scavenger hunts and take and make crafts. Children will keep track of their reading online or on paper logs and will earn virtual badges for reading and completing fun craft and STEM challenges.
