• Regular Summer Hours, Children’s Room Open. As of July 1, we’ll be pretty much on our usual summer schedule: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.-1 p.m.  Upstairs, downstairs, all around (except for the meeting room).  Please wear a mask for everyone’s well-being, and try to limit your visit to 45 minutes.  Masks are required for children 2-12.  Come on in—it’ll be good to see you.
• What, to the Slave, is Your 4th of July? A Virtual Community Reading Event. As we did last year, we will take turns reading aloud—via Zoom–Frederick Douglass’s powerful 1852 speech to the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society, followed by discussion and  comments by Dr. Tina Ligon of the National Archives and Howard Community College, where she teaches African-American history.  If you would like to be a reader, please contact Courtney Michael at cmichael@minlib.net.  To simply attend, register on our website under Events. You’ll receive the Zoom link via email on Thursday, July 1.  The reading begins that day at 7 p.m.
• 10 Essentials for Hiking. Calling all hikers, especially newbies!  Do you know the 10 essentials that should be in your backpack at all times to keep yourself safe on the trails?  Even for a day hike, we have to be prepared and ready, especially for emergencies. Join this fun, hands-on talk with Nancy Wind about packing for your next day hike.  In 2015, Nancy founded Peaks and Poses Trail Yoga to combine her love for yoga and the outdoors.  Register for her talk through our Events menu.  Monday, July 12 at 7 p.m.
• Adult Craft: Agate Painting. Create a beautiful watercolor painting of an agate slice with Lisa Walker of the Pop Up Art School.  The technique of wet-on-wet watercolor and salt on wet watercolor paint is easy to learn and fun to do, resulting in a striking piece of art.  Sign up for the Zoom link and select a curbside kit pick-up time.  Limited to 15 people.  Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m.
• Your Stories: COVID-19 in Wayland. Facts and figures will be recorded, but our personal stories will give future historians and Wayland citizens a better sense of what life was like during the pandemic.  We’ve created a short survey for you to record your thoughts and experiences.  Look for the blog post on our home page, as well as under the “About Us” menu.  If you have photographs, documents, artwork, videos, etc. please email them to mwright@minlib.net.
• Big Return on Investment. In just five months, between January 1 and May 31, we circulated $1,107,244.55 worth of materials. This is more than five times the library’s annual Books and Materials budget and approaching our total annual FY2021 budget of $1,153,597.  Pretty darn good value for your tax dollar, if we say so ourselves.

FOR BABIES, TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOLERS

• *Outdoor Storytimes with Ms. Carly. Join Ms. Carly for an outdoor storytime! Children and their caregivers will listen to stories, sing songs, and perform fun rhymes and movements. We will meet on the green lawn behind the library. For babies through preschool age children, with caregivers. This event is weather permitting. • *Outside Storytimes with Ms. Pam! Join Ms. Pam for stories, songs, puppets, and activities OUTSIDE on the lawn behind the library. For ages 2.5 to 5 years with an adult. Questions? • Kids Take and Make Craft: Glowing Bottle Firefly. Let’s celebrate our 2021 Summer Reading Program: Tails and Tales with animal themed Take & Make Craft Kits. This week our craft for kids is a Glowing Bottle Firefly! We will provide most of the supplies you need to make this craft at home. For ages 4-10. Limit one per child. • Creepy Critters with Joy Marzolf on zoom. How do you move if you don’t have legs? Hiss without using your mouth? Eat by using a built-in straw? Learn about some of the strange and creepy critters from our wild and wacky world of animals. Don’t miss a visit with some live creepy creatures at the end! • *Make a Dinosaur Skeleton: Outdoor STEM program with Ms. Pam. Children will design and create their own dinosaur skeletons out of pasta!  For ages 4 and up. Please register HERE or online from our Eventkeeper calendar. Monday, July 12 at 2:30 p.m.

*Outdoor programs meet on the green lawn behind the library. Face masks are required for children ages 2 and up. We will assist in maintaining social distancing but encourage attendees to bring along a picnic blanket or a lawn chair. Registration is required. Outdoor programming is weather permitting. • Teens Take and Make Craft: Tissue Paper Butterfly. Bring home a Take & Make Craft Kit and make something awesome! This week our craft for Teens is a Tissue Paper Butterfly. We will provide the supplies you need to make this craft at home. This craft is for ages 11 and up. Limit one per teen. • Teens Cooking Green on Zoom: Make Blueberry Hand Pies. Let’s celebrate Summer and those tasty beautiful blueberries! Each participant will make a poppy seed tart dough and fill with local blueberries, to make mini hand-pies. To finish the mini pies off, we will whip some cream and add a dab to each mini hand-pie! SUMMER READING

• Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5 has started! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades pre-K to Grade 5 is Tails & Tales. We will be bringing you a blend of virtual and in-person (outside) activities featuring animals, real and imaginary. Highlights include virtual zookeeper chats with Buttonwood Park Zoo and Roger Williams Park Zoo, and a virtual bug show with Joy Marzolf of The Joys of Nature. We will also offer in-person outdoor STEM and craft programs, scavenger hunts, and weekly take and make crafts. Children will keep track of their reading online or on paper logs and will earn virtual badges for time reading, for attending programs, and for completing fun craft and STEM challenges. Every child who registers can pick up a goody bag at the library. Participants will also earn raffle tickets for prizes! Register for the kids Summer Reading Program at Waylandlibrary.Beanstack.org.
• Summer Reading Program for Teens has started! Teens will keep track of their reading online and will earn badges for books read, for writing reviews, for attending programs, and for completing take and make crafts. Teens will also earn raffle tickets for prizes! Programming highlights include a Comics Making Workshop with Jarrett Lerner, Teens Cooking Green, and an Ocean Tides Wall Hanging Craft, all offered through zoom.
