Events and Announcements from the Wayland Library, December 23, 2010

HOLIDAY HOURS.  The library will be closed on Friday, December 31, and Saturday, January 1.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUG ANDERSON.  In January, Doug Anderson will present photographs in an exhibit entitled Sardinia:  Island Frontiers.  Deceptively central on a map of the Mediterranean, this Vermont-size island tends to feel more like the edge of the Earth.  The exhibit showcases the island's mythical landscape and some of the people who call it home.  A native of Wayland, Doug spent a year in Sardinia (2007-2008) as recipient of Harvard’s Henry Russell Shaw Fellowship and the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Fellowship.  Having just completed a program in radio documentary at the Salt Institute in Portland, Maine, he is looking forward to a career in producing multimedia documentary.

EARRING WORKSHOP.  On Saturday, January 22, from 2-4 p.m. Norma Radoff returns to the library to give a fourth workshop for beginners on working with semi-precious stones. All materials will be provided, but if you have your own beads, please DO bring them. The class is limited to ten adults. If you have already taken this class, please don't sign up, as others are waiting.  Online registration will open a month before the class.

HOW TO LIVE LONGER IN WAYLAND—COMMUNITY RESOURCES.  On Tuesday, January 11, at 7:30 p.m., our Great Presenters program will focus on community services and resources available to older adults in Wayland that will assist them in staying in their homes.  Representatives of several town organizations serving adult residents will form a panel for this presentation. The panel will be moderated by former library director Louise Brown and will include representatives from the Council on Aging, the Housing Authority, the Library, Parmenter Health Center, the Recreation Department, and PILOT.  We will also introduce a new online Directory of Services for Older Adults sponsored by the Library. The directory has been developed to provide information on the wide variety of services available to middle-aged and older adults in Wayland.  This presentation will be in the Large Hearing Room of the Wayland Town Building.

POETRY WORKSHOP.  The next meeting of the library’s Poetry Workshop will be on Wednesday, January 5, at 2:00 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.  For more information about joining the group, contact Joan Kimball at 978-318-0991.
